EDMONTON -- In a game that had moths versus windshield written all over it, there wasn't enough wiper fluid in all of Edmonton to clean off the goo.

But despite all the guts, there wasn't much glory to be found for Team Canada in crushing hopelessly overmatched Denmark 10-2 at the world junior championship Thursday.

This was lambs being lead to slaughter and the Canadians simply went about their business with the cold and ruthless efficiency of an executioner.

"It's a hard game to play in when you're expected to win and expected to score a lot of goals," said head coach Don Hay. "It's not easy to do. But we got through the game with no injuries and we got the win."

They had the win after the first period, in which they outshot Denmark 19-3 and built a 4-0 lead, but there were, unfortunately, two more periods to play, which can best be described as a half-interested cat pawing at a half-dead mouse.

"Maybe not our toughest competition," understated Ryan Strome. "But we have to continually strive to be better. None of the games are getting easier from here on in so we have to keep getting better ourselves."

They'd have to play corpses for the next game to be any easier, but all you can do is play who they put in front of you and the Canadians are 3-0 so far, having beaten Finland 8-1 and the Czech Republic 5-0 for a 23-2 margin of victory so far.

Three straight blowouts might not be the best way to prepare for the biggest games of their lives, but what can you do?

"People can look at it however they want, but we've been tested," said Brett Connolly. "The Finns were a great team, the Czechs gave us a good battle, too. We're a good team."

After scoring more goals in the first (four) than Denmark had shots (three), Canada eased up in the second but still managed to score its fifth, sixth and seventh goals of the night.

And that was it, the other team was Dane like dinner.

"It was a tough one for Denmark, coming up from the B pool," said winger Boone Jenner. "But we just tried to keep playing our game, just play simple hockey."

"It's not like we were trying to run up the score," added forward Brendan Gallagher. "We've been on the other side of those, all of us have, and it's not a good feeling."

The Canadians spent the third period trying not to get injured and that was all the opening Denmark needed to strike back. Nicolai Meyer sniped one past Mark Visentin to break the shutout and eight minutes later Emil Kristensen added a second Danish goal.

At that point, Canada got serious again and scored its eighth and ninth and 10th.

"We knew on the bench that we had to get back to work," said Gallagher. "We were a little sluggish and they took advantage of us. They didn't stop working for the whole game. We just went back to the things that made us successful and were able to score some more goals."

So the Canadians are 3-0 so far, with one game left in the round robin -- a New Year's Eve date with the Americans that could either be for first place in the pool, or rendered entirely meaningless if the U.S. loses to the Czech Republic on Friday.

"We'll be ready to roll on New Year's Eve," said Jenner. "It should be a fun game to play in, and a competitive one."

For a change.

LATE HITS: Visentin posted the win for Canada, but a cardboard cutout of Taylor Swift would have won, too, so there wasn't much to be learned from his second appearance of the tournament. Hay says he will decide after Friday's practice who starts against the Americans on New Year's Eve.

Lenders, plagued by scandal, allow more short sales

Short sales up, foreclosures down. That's because in many cases a short sale may be the lesser of two evils for banks and homeowners versus a foreclosure.

It's a tarnished silver lining for people at risk of losing their houses and homeowners in neighborhoods blighted by bank-owned properties, but the robosigning scandal that slowed the foreclosure process to a crawl appears to have increased lender interest in short sales.?

"Foreclosure sales are pretty devastating," said Faith Schwartz, executive director of Hope Now, a resource for homeowners facing foreclosure. "We'd much prefer a modification, but if [homeowners] don't quality, then the next best alternative is deed-in-lieu or short sales."?

Short sales,?in which the lender agrees to let the owner sell the home for less than the amount owed on the mortgage,?and foreclosures both climbed in 2010, but while short sales rose by 26,000 this year, the number of foreclosures fell by 255,000, according to Hope Now. Short sales, along with deed-in-lieu of foreclosure deals in which the lender takes the deed essentially as payment for the mortgage, still upend families, torch credit ratings and hurt neighboring property values, but they're far less toxic than foreclosures.??

Short sales are?better for homeowners. They can stay in their homes, and the quicker process means they can begin rebuilding their credit sooner. Credit scoring firm Fair Isaac Co., which developed the FICO score, says foreclosures and short sales slash the same number of points from a homeowner's credit score. Homeowners with short sales may be able to obtain a loan sooner than foreclosed homeowners, though, which can improve their credit.

In some states, mortgage lenders can pursue a delinquency judgement against homeowners for the difference between the amount due on the mortgage and the purchase price at a foreclosure auction. A delinquent homeowner engaging in a short sale has an opportunity to negotiate away the bank's right to sue for that judgement.

The biggest plus for banks is that they stand to make more from a short sale than a foreclosure. According to foreclosure specialists RealtyTrac.com, the average price of a foreclosed home in the second quarter of 2011 was $164,217, while the average price of a short sale was $192,129.

Besides yielding less, foreclosures also cost lenders more in legal and administrative resources. "The incentives against foreclosing are even larger now," Karen Dynan,?co-director of the Economic Studies program at the Brookings Institution, said via email. "Servicers are facing enormous staffing constraints because they are trying to deal with so many distressed properties, so it is probably even harder now to find the staff to do the paperwork for the foreclosure."

Lenders are also spending more on due diligence, she said. "Servicers and lenders are being heavily scrutinized right now so they?probably are more worried than ever about making a mistake in a foreclosure that could subject them to legal liability in the future."

Neighborhoods also benefit from?short sales rather than foreclosures. "Short sales typically sell at less of a discount than foreclosure sales do," Jed Kolko, chief economist at real estate website Trulia.com, said via email. "Also, foreclosed homes often sit vacant while short sales are re-occupied more quickly. For both these reasons, short sales tend to depress neighboring property values less than foreclosures do."

Another issue that plagues foreclosures is vandalism, either from opportunistic criminals preying on vacant homes or from disgruntled homeowners. "It's often not a friendly process so you frequently have cases where people deliberately vandalize homes," Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, said.

Some economists worry that the drop in foreclosures is less an indication of lenders' willingness to compromise and more a function of a huge backlog of foreclosures that haven't been processed. "Foreclosures are going to be a drag on the market for along period of time," Baker said.?Until these distressed homes are resold and assimilated back into the market, real estate prices can't stabilize.?

Baker added, though, that lenders facing?years' worth of legal wrangling and costs to execute a foreclosure may be more willing to accept a buyer's offer in a short sale.?

The other caveat is that short sales aren't an option for all distressed homeowners. Short sales are contingent on the ability of sometimes multiple lenders to agree on a price that a buyer is also willing to pay. For people who took out multiple mortgages or have other liens, this presents a challenge. "It's just a little more complicated when you have more parties involved," Schwartz said.

Debra Scherer: The Social Bubble

What if social media, as it functions today, was merely the first step towards a new sophistication in human interaction? We must admit it has its fascinating aspects, as we are inherently social beings. Yet, watching the development so far, one thing is for sure, human interactions can be as subtle and sophisticated as an elegant waltz and as unsophisticated, clunky and childish as a game of dodge ball. Of course, the worst most unsophisticated versions of things appear first and become wildly popular. Just as music may have started with the beating of a primitive drum, now we have symphonies. Eventually, they become more refined, more poetic, or in other words, they finally grow up.

We spoke with great friend of The Little Squares, Randy Komisar, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, Silicon Valley's leading venture capital firm, about the state of social media, and he agrees, we're not quite there yet.

"Social media clearly has a lasting, enduring place in the technosphere, it's not going anywhere, but it's clear to me that it's very primitive in its attempt to capture the value of relationships."

So in our current social situation, what is going on? It's about a couple of things. One as we have mentioned, is this childish attitude we always seem to have to new shiny sparkly things. We are so easily seduced by simple marvels, like watching a young child's face when you blow a bubble and the sunbeams make its fragile universe sparkle with wonder as it floats away. That's the magic moment. And its exactly what is happening with these social communities that are forming around very simple and usually unsophisticated groups who are commenting, liking, following and participating, not only through Facebook, but also in newly forming worlds, new "bubbles" like Instagram, where everyone takes super processed digital images of anything and they are truly fascinated with their computer generated sunset or landscape and millions of other cool people with cool names say "Wow, cool pic!" or "Awesome shot!", just like a three year old watches his bubble float away, simply mesmerized.

"One of the dangers in media, as we have blown the doors off of distribution, is without that constraint, it's really hard to sort through everything. And there are so many voices. There are no gatekeepers, so we have to figure out how to protect ourselves from the garbage. Garbage makes me crazy. I love the web, but I hate stumbling through the garbage."

"How are we going to truly express ourselves in ways that others truly can consume and enjoy and share? How are we going to relate to others in meaningful ways in a virtual medium? But in a much more natural way than us all having a high school locker in the hall way with pictures pinned inside when you open it up. Its not who we are anymore, not even most of Facebook's customers, but were kind of locked into that paradigm."

Eventually, we will look back at the silliness of its uses and declarations of what it all means and have a laugh. In fact, lets laugh right now. Even the concept that political movements, protests and popular uprisings are somehow the result of Twitter or Facebook should be insulting to every high school history teacher. Martin Luther certainly didn't need Twitter and I would argue along with many a watchdog group that reliance on technology in the wrong place at the wrong time could be the ultimate undoing of a social uprising that really counts. There have been popular uprisings against powers that be long before anyone could read or write, let alone post video to their Facebook "timeline" directly through their smart phone.

Another example of this childlike behavior is the rise of "the fear of missing out." It seems like every technology marketing campaign talks about giving one the ability to never miss the party. And that means every party. All the time.

"The fear of missing out is the new psychosis driving the valley. It's amazing to watch, because almost all of the behaviors we see in the valley are natural behaviors of certain age groups, but they get amplified across other age groups largely because of the money involved. So I always liken it to, you know, the 60-year-old guy trying to fit into tight jeans to fit in. They are trying to do that here in Silicon Valley because that's where the money is.

"Kids are naturally insecure about who they are and what other people think about them and "the fear of missing out" and "who's the best," but for all of us to act like kids everyday does us all a disservice. And that's what you find in the valley is that "fear of missing out" is driving this entire engine for not just the kids, which is quite natural for them, but to adults and people who should know better. And people who should demand more. And want more from all this than reverting back to their insecure adolescence."

So lets demand more. While Silicon Valley keeps funding new games of dodge ball, its up to us to decide to "sit this game out." The systems are out there and technology will allow eventually for the development of scaled experiences that reflect more grown-up wonders.

Odd notes, mad-dash trips mark Iowa closing sprint (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa's GOP presidential contest remains deeply unsettled, if not downright strange, five days before the Jan. 3 caucus.

Rep. Ron Paul, drawing big crowds, got a surprise endorsement Wednesday night from Rep. Michele Bachmann's now-former state chairman.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who has languished for months, suddenly seems to have momentum, just as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich may be losing his.

And Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who began the campaign by de-emphasizing Iowa, might be poised to finish on top, according to some new polls.

Romney now is making an unabashed push in Iowa. His rivals are scrambling to deny him huge momentum heading into the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire, his second home.

Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian-leaning Texan, drew about 500 people at the Iowa State fairgrounds in Ames late Wednesday. A group of Occupy activists tried to interrupt the rally, but that wasn't the main surprise.

State Sen. Kent Sorenson, who had campaigned a few hours earlier with Bachmann as a state chairman of her bid, announced he would support Paul instead.

Paul's anti-government appeal appears to tap into the desire of a frustrated electorate for profound change in an era of high unemployment and an economy that has only slowly recovered from the recession.

"In the last couple of weeks I fell into Ron Paul's camp," said Bob Colby of Newton, who spent 21 years in the military and is a former employee of a now-shuttered Maytag plant in town.

Paul, who is airing TV ads hitting Romney and Gingrich, planned a town hall meeting Thursday in Perry, Iowa, plus stops in Atlantic and Council Bluffs.

There were other odd campaign notes Wednesday.

Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement disclosed an effort to persuade either Santorum or Bachmann to quit the race and endorse the other. "Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister and a leader among Iowa's social conservatives.

Neither candidate appeared interested.

Meanwhile, an ever more confident Romney scheduled stops Thursday in Cedar Falls, Mason City and Ames. He has air support: TV ads say he has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.

Asked Wednesday about the prospects for back-to-back victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney demurred. "I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms," he said. "I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can."

Santorum seems to be gaining steam, according to a Time-CNN survey and some private polls. "We're very, very happy with the new numbers," he told reporters in Dubuque.

Acknowledging widespread voter anger in an age of high unemployment, Santorum told an audience Wednesday: "If you want to stick it to the man, don't vote for Ron Paul. That's not sticking it to anybody but the Republican Party."

Santorum, who planned events Thursday in the eastern Iowa towns of Coralville, Wilton, Muscatine and Davenport, says he believes his improved showing reflects voters belief that he "can be trusted" and that "we've got a record to back it up."

He said in an appearance on NBC's "Today" show Thursday that he's the only one in the Republican field who "has a track record" of winning elections in states, like Pennsylvania, where it was necessary for GOP candidates to attract independents and Democrats.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry adjusted his position on abortion for a second straight day, telling reporters he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk. On Tuesday, he had told a pastor that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights and now opposed the procedure in cases of rape or incest after having recently met a woman who said she was conceived by a rape.

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus Wednesday: "That's correct."

Perry planned Thursday events in Washington, Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown.

Gingrich, who has suffered a barrage of TV attack ads lately, also took aim at Paul. "I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that the commander in chief would think it was irrelevant to have an Iranian nuclear weapon," he said Wednesday.

Gingrich planned events Thursday in Sioux City, Storm Lake, Denison and Carroll.

Bachmann took aim Wednesday at her two rivals from Texas. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Bachmann scheduled events Thursday in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Nevada, Iowa.

Ponder returns to practice for Vikings, will start

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Christian Ponder has passed all his concussion tests and is expected to start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in the season finale against Chicago on Sunday.

Ponder returned to practice on Wednesday after he was knocked out of the game against the Redskins. He says he had a slight headache on Saturday night after the game, but felt better on Sunday and is ready to go.

Ponder was 8 of 13 for 68 yards before leaving the game against the Redskins. Joe Webb came in to lead the Vikings to just their third victory of the season. He was 4 for 5 for 84 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 34 yards and a score.

Coach Leslie Frazier says Ponder remains the team's No. 1 quarterback.

As Iraq War ends, no parade for US troops in cards

WASHINGTON ? Americans probably will not be seeing a huge ticker-tape parade anytime soon for troops returning from Iraq, and it is not clear if veterans of the nine-year campaign will ever enjoy the grand, flag-waving, red-white-and-blue homecoming that the nation?s fighting men and women received after World War II and the Gulf War.

Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven?t been asked to plan one.

Most welcome-homes have been smaller-scale: hugs from families at military posts across the country, a somber commemoration by President Barack Obama at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

With tens of thousands of U.S. troops still fighting a bloody war in Afghanistan, anything that looks like a big victory celebration could be seen as unseemly and premature, some say.

"It?s going to be a bit awkward to be celebrating too much, given how much there is going on and how much there will be going on in Afghanistan," said Don Mrozek, a military history professor at Kansas State University.

Two New York City councilmen, Republicans Vincent Ignizio and James Oddo, have called for a ticker-tape parade down the stretch of Broadway known as the Canyon of Heroes. A similar celebration after the Gulf War was paid for with more than $5.2 million in private donations, a model the councilmen would like to follow.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said last week that he was open to the idea but added, "It?s a federal thing that we really don?t want to do without talking to Washington, and we?ll be doing that."

A spokesman for the mayor declined to elaborate on the city?s reasons for consulting with Washington. Ignizio said he had been told by the mayor?s office that Pentagon officials were concerned that a celebration could spark violence overseas and were evaluating the risk.

Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said that he has not heard that issue raised and that New York has yet to make a formal proposal. He also said officials are grateful communities around the country are finding ways to recognize the sacrifices of troops and their families.

The last combat troops in Iraq pulled out more than a week ago. About 91,000 U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines are in Afghanistan, battling a stubborn Taliban insurgency and struggling to train Afghan forces so that they eventually can take over security. Many U.S. troops who fought in the Iraq War could end up being sent to Afghanistan.

A parade might invite criticism from those who believe the U.S. left Iraq too soon, as well as from those who feel the war was unjustified. It could also trigger questions about assertions of victory.

Mrozek noted that President George W. Bush?s administration referred to military action in the Middle East as part of a global war on terror, a conflict that is hard to define by conventional measures of success.

"This is not a war on a particular place or a particular force," he said.

Bush himself illustrated the perils of celebrating milestones in the war, Mrozek said, when he landed on an aircraft carrier and hailed the end of major combat operations in Iraq behind a "Mission Accomplished" banner in May 2003. U.S. troops remained in Iraq for 8? more years, and Bush was criticized over the banner.

The benchmarks were clearer in previous wars. After World War II, parades marked Japan?s surrender. After the Gulf War, celebrations marked the troops? return after Iraqi forces were driven out of Kuwait.

The only mass celebrations of U.S. military activities since Sept. 11, 2001, were largely spontaneous: Large crowds gathered in Times Square and outside the White House in April after Osama bin Laden was killed.

How fast?! China tests 300-mph train

BEIJING?? China launched a super-rapid test train over the weekend which is capable of travelling 310-miles per hour (500 kilometers per hour), state media said on Monday, as the country moves ahead with its railway ambitions despite serious problems on its high-speed network.

The train, made by a subsidiary of CSR Corp Ltd , China's largest train maker, is designed to resemble an ancient Chinese sword, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

It "will provide useful reference for current high-speed railway operations", it quoted train expert Shen Zhiyun as saying.

But future Chinese trains will not necessarily run at such high speeds, CSR chairman Zhao Xiaogang told the Beijing Morning News.

"We aims to ensure the safety of trains operation," he said.

China's railway industry has had a tough year, highlighted by a collision between two high-speed trains in July which killed at least 40 people. Construction of new high-speed trains in China has since been a near halt.

In February, the railways minister, Liu Zhijun, a key figure behind the boom in the sector, was dismissed over corruption charges that have not yet been tried in court.

A fan barely moves the warm, soupy air inside the packed pub back room. It?s the sort of place where Ian Dury played with his band Kilburn and the High Roads in the early 1970s, one leg ravaged by polio, his Essex guttersnipe wit and intransigent attitude influencing a watching Johnny Rotten. But it was his next band the Blockheads who provided the jazz-funk, pub-rock engine which powered his greatest work, often co-written with Chaz Jankel.

Since Dury?s death from cancer in 2000, last year?s biopic with Andy Serkis, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, and Paul Sirett?s great theatre musical Reasons to be Cheerful, have revived his work. The decision of the Blockheads to carry on, though, provides the purest connection.

Making two more albums to date, they?re a focal point for the mostly middle-aged fans here tonight. Dury?s former roadie and minder Derek the Draw is at the mic: Dury?s retainer, not his replacement. Impassive behind green bottle-top Lennon specs, handlebar moustache white, he?s a conduit for the parts of his boss?s spirit he shares. The band start with two of his co-writes with Jankel for Staring Down the Barrel (2009), ?George the Human Pigeon? and ?A Little Knowledge?. ?Before I could shake a stick at a jack-rabbit...? Derek muses in the pub tale preceding the latter, dry cockney wit, wordplay and voice just right. Dury?s furious charisma isn?t sought.

Mick Gallagher?s jazzy piano introduces ?Inbetweenies?, Dury?s happily salacious lyric (?put your fingers where my mouth just went...?) preceding the better-known ?Wake Up And Make Love With Me?. Norman Watt-Roy pulls the trigger on its finish with a pluck of his bass. A revered player, knees and elbows always at sharp, hip angles, he and Israeli jazz saxophonist Gilad Atzmon are the musicians to watch.

Many of the crowd choose discretion over valour in the sweaty back room, resting at the bar till a favourite song starts. Mine is ?Sweet Gene Vincent?, a tribute to the late, gammy-legged rocker with poetry and power which is now one to Dury. ?Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick? gains thuggish force from the fans, jazzy subtleties abandoned to dance and let rip. This strange afterlife for a band who?ve lost their leader wouldn?t work for everyone. The Attractions without Elvis Costello? But the Blockheads keep something no one else can do breathing.

Cassola, Rome's Jewish Christmas Treat

A popular Italian saying advises: ?Dress like a Turk, and eat like a Jew.?

Jews have enjoyed an uninterrupted presence in Italy for more than 2,200 years, producing a delicious cuisine with almost endless regional variations, that profoundly affected broader Italian cuisine. Contrary to the all-too-common American assumption that most Jewish food is bland or boring, Jewish Italian cuisine tends to be seen as a delicacy by non-Jewish locals. Some of the most popular restaurants in Rome serve traditional Jewish dishes, like the famous fried artichokes.

Rome?s unofficial Christmas dessert, cassola, or a baked ricotta cheese cake, was originally a Jewish dish. In the 16th century, while some Jewish communities in Northern Italy made a fresh cheese baked sandwich-like dish sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon called pizza dolce, Roman Jews used ricotta to make large sweet pancakes cooked in a skillet. The dish was called ?casciola? (from ?cascio?, cheese), says Italian food historian A.Toaff in his ?Mangiare alla Giudia.?

Over time the dish transformed into a baked ricotta pancake, and was adopted by the Roman Catholic community as a traditional Christmas dessert (Roman Jews serve it on Shavuot). Coincidentally, the earliest Hanukkah levivot or latkes in Eastern Europe were made of cheese and were likely similar to Cassola.

One of the main reasons for cassola?s popularity is that it is shockingly simple to make, including only five main ingredients and no butter or oil (except for greasing the pan). What gives it its delicious creamy texture, similar to a softer, moister, more delicate cheesecake with a firmer outside, is fresh ricotta, which you can purchase from a store or try your hand at making at home. Whether you make it for the last day of Hanukkah or save it until Christmas, it is a true example of an Italian dish ? elegantly simple and delicious.

Cassola

serves 4-6

1 pound ricotta cheese (made from whole milk, without emulsifiers)
4 eggs
1 to 1 ? cup sugar (depending on desired sweetness)
a pinch of salt
zest of one large organic lemon (optional)
? teaspoon cinnamon or vanilla (optional)
1 or 2 tablespoons mild extra-virgin olive oil, or butter

1) Preheat the oven to 400? F. With a whisk or a hand mixer, beat the eggs with the sugar until creamy. Add the ricotta, salt, lemon zest and cinnamon (or vanilla).

2) Grease a 9-10 inch springform baking pan with butter or olive oil, dust with flour, pour the mixture in, and transfer into your pre-heated oven. Bake at 400 F for the first 10 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 F and bake for another 25 minutes.

3) Turn the oven off and allow the cassola to set inside, with the door open, for another 10 or 15 minutes. It should be firmer and golden brown on the outside and very soft and moist inside, like a pudding. Serve warm.

You can also cook it in a greased non-stick or cast iron pan like a frittata, on the stovetop, flipping it once (this was probably the original version), or cook the bottom on the stovetop and the top in the oven under the broiler.

Stores, downturn create new kinds of shoppers

Four new types of American shoppers have emerged this holiday season.

There's the bargain hunter who times deals. The midnight buyer who stays up late for discounts. The returner who gets buyer's remorse. And the "me" shopper who self-gifts.

It's the latest shift by consumers in the fourth year of a weak U.S. economy. Shoppers are expected to spend $469.1 billion during the holiday shopping season that runs from November through December. While it won't be known just how much Americans spent until the season ends on Saturday, it's already clear they are shopping differently than they have in years past.

"We're seeing different types of buying behavior in a new economic reality," says C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group.

The bargain timer
Cost-conscious shoppers haven't just been looking for bargains this season. They've also been more deliberate about when to find those deals. Many believe the biggest bargains come at the beginning and end of the season, which has created a kind of "dumbbell effect" in sales.

For the week ended on Nov. 26, which included the traditional start of the holiday shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving, stores had the biggest sales surge compared with the prior week since 1993, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Stores Sales Index. The cumulative two-week-sales drop-off that followed marked the biggest percentage decline since 2000. Then, stores had another surge in the final days, as retailers stepped up their promotions again.

"Shoppers are budgeting their money and time," says Paco Underhill, whose company, Envirosell, studies how consumers behave in stores. "They're focused on being opportunistic bargain shopping vultures."

Kalilah Middleton, 30, of Queens, is one of them. Starting late on Thanksgiving night, she spent five hours and $400 at Wal-Mart and Target. She bought a TV and clothing at 50 percent off. Then, she waited until Christmas Eve to shop again because she believed she'd get better deals later in the season.

"This is when you get the best deals," says Middleton, an office manager, about her holiday shopping.

Going forward, shoppers are expecting even bigger discounts. According to America's Research Group research firm, 34 percent of shoppers say they want to see post-Christmas discounts of about 70 to 80 percent, up from 20 percent last year.

The midnight buyer
Used to be, bargain shoppers would wake up at the crack of dawn to take advantage of big discounts on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. This year, some shoppers instead stayed up late on Thanksgiving night to get deals.

This behavior was in large part due to retailers' efforts to outdo each other during the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Stores like Macy's, Best Buy and Target for the first time opened at midnight on Thanksgiving night, offering deals that once were reserved for the next day.

Twenty-four percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores at midnight, according to a poll by the National Retail Federation, the industry's biggest trade group. That's up from 9.5 percent the year before when only a few stores were open during that time.

Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were ages 18 to 34. That percentage was higher than among 35- to 54-year-olds, of whom 23.5 percent were in stores by midnight.

Macy's, for one, drew 10,000 people to its midnight opening. Terry Lundgren, Macy's CEO, says many of them were young people who turned out for the Justin Bieber $65 gift sets and discounted fashions.

Anika Ruud, 15, of Boca Raton, Fla., went out with her four cousins to Macy's at midnight and then shopped at Target until 2:30 a.m. She picked up two bras at Macy's for $10. Then, she and her cousins went home to bed.

"It's always been inconvenient," Ruud says of the traditional 4 a.m. Black Friday openings of years past. "No one likes to wake up early."

The returner
Shoppers who were lured into stores by bargains gleefully loaded up on everything from discounted tablet computers to clothing early in the holiday season. But soon after, many of them were rushing back to return the items they bought.

For instance, Elizabeth Yamada, 55, of Fort Lee, N.J., says she got caught up with the shopping frenzy over the Thanksgiving weekend and picked up a $350 coat that was marked down more than 50 percent off at Macy's. She ended up returning the item one week later.

"It was nice, but I didn't need it," says Yamada, who works part-time as a waitress and a hospital aide. "It was impulsive shopping. But I am doing more reflecting."

It's all about buyer's remorse.

For every dollar stores take in this holiday season, it's expected they will have to give back 9.9 cents in returns, up from 9.8 last year, according to the a survey of 110 retailers the NRF. It would be the highest return rate since the recession. In better economic times, it's about 7 cents.

Stores have themselves to blame for the higher returns. They lured shoppers in with deals of up to 60 percent off as early as October. Because of the deals, shoppers spent more than they normally would. And retailers' return policies have been more lax since 2008, with some sweetening their policies even more this year.

The 'me' shopper
One for you; one for me.

After scrimping on themselves during the recession, Americans turned to shopping for themselves. It's a trend that started last year but became more prevalent this season.

According to the NRF, spending for non-gift items will increase by 16 percent this holiday season to $130.43 per person. That's the highest number recorded since it started tracking it in 2004.

"This season, the consumer put herself ahead of the giving," says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with market research firm The NPD Group.

Betty Thomas, a health care coordinator at a hospital in Raleigh, N.C., says she spent $1,700 on a ring and bracelet for herself and a rug for her home during the holiday season. That's up dramatically from the $200 she spent last year.

"I have been putting other people first," Thomas says. "I definitely felt I earned it."

Stores have been encouraging such self-gifting.

AnnTaylor's campaign "Perfect Presents: One for you. One for her" highlighted merchandise like brightly colored sweaters. Brookstone's print ads urged shoppers to get accessories for their iPads and other electronics with the words: "gifts for your gadgets." And Shopittome.com, an online site that alerts consumers to clothing sales they're interested in, launched "Treat Yourself Tuesday" after Thanksgiving weekend.

Donald Trump continues to dabble with the idea of running for President, switching his voter registration from Republican to unaffiliated so he can run as an independent should he choose to enter the 2012 race.

Registered in New York, Trump filed the paperwork on Thursday and his spokesman Michael Cohen told NBC News of Trump?s decision on Friday.

He reiterated Trump?s oft-stated position on running ? he will run if the Republicans fail to nominate a candidate he believes can unseat Barack Obama.

Trump?s candidacy would not get under way for several months as he will wait until his reality show, ?The Apprentice,? concludes in May of 2012.

It produced the highest overnight rating for a game played on Christmas night since 1995.

U.N. condemns Damascus bombs, expresses grave concern (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The United Nations expressed grave concern about twin suicide car bombings in Damascus and condemned the attacks that killed 44 people and lent a grim new face to the uprising in Syria.

With world powers arguing about details of a U.N. resolution on Syria, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for an immediate end to the bloodshed and urged the Syrian government to implement a peace plan proposed by the Arab League.

The first batch of 50 Arab League monitors will head to Syria on Monday to assess whether Damascus is abiding by an Arab peace plan, Egypt's state news agency reported on Friday.

European and U.S. officials want the U.N. Security Council to impose an arms embargo and other sanctions on Syria's government because of its nine-month-old crackdown on protesters against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad, which U.N. officials say has killed more than 5,000 people.

The suicide bombs, aimed at two security buildings, sent human limbs flying and streets in Syria's capital were littered with human remains and the blackened hulk of cars.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi said the attacks were carried out by "terrorists (trying) to sabotage the will for change" in Syria, and followed warnings from Lebanon that al Qaeda fighters had infiltrated Syria from Lebanese territory.

Some of Assad's opponents said the suicide attacks could have been staged by the government itself.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the "terrorist attacks."

"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and ... any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable," its statement said.

"EXTREME OPPOSITION"

Western powers say government security forces have been responsible for most of the violence in Syria. But Russia, an old ally of Damascus, wants any resolution to be even-handed.

"If the requirement is that we drop all reference to violence coming from extreme opposition, that's not going to happen," U.N. ambassador Vitaly Churkin said in New York after Russia submitted a revised draft resolution to the council.

"If they expect us to have arms embargo, that's not going to happen," he said. "We know what arms embargo means these days. It means that - we saw it in Libya - that you cannot supply weapons to the government but everybody else can supply weapons to various opposition groups."

German Ambassador Peter Wittig said the latest Russian draft did not go far enough. "We need to put the weight of the council behind the Arab League," he said.

"That includes the demands to release political prisoners, that includes a clear signal for accountability for those who have perpetrated human rights violations."

Assad has used tanks and troops to try to crush the street protests inspired by other Arab uprisings this year. Such rallies are now increasingly eclipsed by an armed insurgency against his security apparatus.

But Friday's blasts signaled a dramatic escalation.

"It's a new phase. We're getting militarized here," said Joshua Landis, a Syria expert at the University of Oklahoma who felt Friday's bombs were a "small premonition" of what may come in a country that some analysts see slipping towards civil war.

"This is when the Syrian opposition is beginning to realize they are on their own," he added, referring to Western reluctance to intervene militarily in Syria.

MANGLED BODIES

The interior ministry spokesman said 166 people were wounded by the Damascus explosions. It broadcast footage of mangled bodies being carried in blankets and stretchers into ambulances, a row of corpses wrapped in sheets lying in the street.

The United States condemned the attacks, saying there was "no justification for terrorism of any kind" and that the work of the Arab League should not be hindered.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Al Qaeda are Sunni Muslim militants. Assad and Syria's power elite belong to the Alawite branch of Shi'ite Islam while the majority of Syrians, including protesters and insurgents, are Sunnis.

"I'm defending my people," Ali, 45, an Alawite factory worker issued by police with a gun which he has used against protesters in the city of Homs, said in comments passed on to Reuters. "We can't let them topple the regime, they'll go after us and kill us all."

Syria has generally barred foreign media from the country, making it hard to verify accounts of events from either side.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 15 civilians were killed outside the capital on Friday, eight of them in Homs.

The Arab League peace plan stipulates a withdrawal of troops from protest-hit cities and towns, release of prisoners and dialogue with the opposition.

Damascus says more than 1,000 prisoners have been freed since the Arab plan was agreed and the army has pulled out of cities. Anti-Assad activists say no such pullout has occurred.

Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Alao said on Saturday that his country's oil production had fallen by about 30 to 35 percent as a result of sanctions imposed on Syria over its crackdown.

The European Union has stepped up its sanctions against Syria's oil industry, including blacklisting state-owned firms. The Arab League has also imposed sanctions on financial and other dealings with Syria.

Hoy etrenamos esta nueva secci?n de noticias sobre identidad corporativa que no ocupar?n todo un art?culo, sino que se resumir?n brevemente en un mismo post.

Cofidis, estrena identidad corporativa

La compa??a espa?ola l?der en cr?dito personal cambia de imagen. Se ha llevado a cabo un restyling de la marca, para dotarla de modernidad, simplicidad y equilibrio. Su icono, un sol que representaba el positivismo, ha sido afinado y degradado, y se ha marcado mejor la separaci?n entre ?ste y el texto. La tipograf?a se suaviza, sin serifas y en caja baja, m?s redondeada y compacta. Se destaca la C en may?sculas rodeada por los rayos del sol.

Youtube limpia su logo

Youtube ha renovado recientemente la apariencia de su web y con este cambio han aprovechado para limpiar su logotipo de brillos y degradados optando por un conjunto mucho m?s plano (sigue existiendo cierto degradado, pero es muy sutil). Youtube no tocaba su logotipo desde 2006.

Energy es la nueva marca de Mediaset

Mediaset Espa?a contin?a preparando el lanzamiento de su nuevo canal para principios de 2012, que estar? dirigido especialmente al ?p?blico principalmente masculino, joven y urbano?. Energy ser? finalmente el nombre y la marca de la futura cadena. El logotipo de Energy, una ?E? may?scula que ?a?na la esencia y el estilo de la imagen? del resto de canales del grupo, as? como algunos de sus ?elementos m?s representativos? como, por ejemplo, la parte superior de la ?E? -presente en los logos de Telecinco, LaSiete y Factor?a de Ficci?n- adopta el negro como color corporativo.

Caja Rural se renueva, pero solo en Castell?n

Caja Rural ha adoptado un nuevo logotipo, pero solo en su sucursal de Castell?n. En el nuevo logotipo de Caja Rural Castell?n se ha optado por una tipograf?a redonda y en caja baja, en un esfuerzo por transmitir modernidad, simplicidad y cercan?a.
La raz?n de la existencia del c?rculo con la abreviatura ?CS? es que es un icono muy implantado en el imaginario de los castellonenses por su presencia en las matr?culas de los veh?culos durante d?cadas y que sigue siendo muy popular al definir a Castell?n en los foros y redes sociales en internet. Adem?s, se ha incorporado un otra tonalidad de verde, han eliminado el icono de las espigas y se ha apostado por la caja baja.

La Asociaci?n de Bancos Peruanos adopta una imagen corporativa m?s actual

La Asociaci?n de bancos del Per? (Asbanc) ha comenzado a utilizar un nuevo logotipo institucional, tras 15 a?os utilizando su antigua marca.
As? mismo, el gremio bancario relanz? tambi?n su p?gina web (www.asbanc.com.pe).
Un restyling completamente necesario, que dota de contemporaneidad a la marca, con un icono moderno y que sigue bastante las tendencias actuales del dise?o corporativo (degradados, formas en volumen?), todo esto acompa?ado de una tipograf?a sencilla en caja baja. Una mejora sustancial.
