Man's arrest in alleged Lindsay Lohan dispute voided

NEW YORK (AP) ? A 25-year-old man initially arrested Sunday on an assault charge after Lindsay Lohan claimed he grabbed her in a New York hotel room in an argument over cellphone images was freed hours later and his arrest voided when the charge could not be substantiated, law enforcement officials said.

Instead, Christian LaBella of Valley Village, Calif., and Lohan were filing harassment complaints with police against each other after they were interviewed by police about their run-in, law enforcement officials said.

Afterward, Lohan publicist Steve Honig expressed outrage that police did not charge LaBella.

"We think it's both distressing and outrageous," he said in a telephone interview. "Lindsey was assaulted and there needs to be a consequence for that."

LaBella could not be reached for comment.

LaBella was taken into custody about 6 a.m. after a 911 call came from the swank W Hotel in Manhattan's Union Square where Lohan apparently pulled the fire alarm, the two officials said. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

A former congressional aide, LaBella was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge but released later Sunday. The charge could not be substantiated so the arrest will be voided, the officials said.

The paperwork was being completed on cross-harassment complaints, which are considered a violation, and no other legal action would be taken, the officials said.

Lohan and LaBella met hours earlier at a night club, though it was unclear whether they previously knew each other, the officials said. They went back to her room, when she noticed the cellphone photos of her on his phone and grabbed the device, the officials said.

She claimed LaBella grabbed her and threw her, but later he said she had forcefully taken his phone, the officials said. Lohan was injured but not hospitalized, Honig said in a statement.

"Lindsay has spoken with police and is fully cooperating with the investigation," he said after LaBella's arrest.

This is Lohan's second run-in with law enforcement in as many weeks in New York City. The 26-year-old was accused last week of clipping a pedestrian with her car outside a nightclub and driving away. She was given a ticket and was scheduled to appear in court Oct. 23. Honig has said he expects those allegations to be proven false.

The actress was also involved in a car accident in California this summer that sent her and an assistant to a hospital, but didn't result in serious injuries for anyone. The accident remains under investigation.

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

Lohan recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

Steve Tomaszewski, a spokesman for Illinois Rep. John Shimkus, confirmed Sunday afternoon that LaBella has worked for the congressman in his Washington office. Tomaszewski said no one from the Republican's office had been contacted by LaBella.

There is certainly an important legal big difference from a present and also a bank loan. A really generous relative or good friend may offer you $5000 regarding auto repairs, as an example. In case there's no hope of payment, the amount of money may very well be a present. The actual provider could not file suit for payment later within a municipal match. However when the credit provider designates the amount of money just like a bank loan as well as the consumer pays back again a dollar, the bucks can be viewed a legitimate loan and also the loan provider could demand repayment whenever. Small statements legal courts spend a lot of period determining whether a transaction which include cash would be a present or bank loan. Because of this paperwork is essential when designing personal financial loans to buddies or perhaps family members.

The requirements for getting credit are quite obvious. In case you are employed, having a regular monthly income regarding $800 or even more, and also have a bank-account, you fulfill the fundamental qualifications. Some loan companies inside our network might have extra requirements.

Cash financial products tend to be unguaranteed financial loans eliminated upon your next salary. Because they're short-term lending products, they could be small; different from $100 to $1500 as well as payment comes to your next pay day. They could be very useful for conquering a quick financial emergency, however shouldn't be viewed as a long-term monetary solution.

The majority of home loan programs are addressed through finance institutions or other expert lenders. They might make use of a variety of conditions to determine if the potential client is skilled for a financial loan. Past credit rating is practically usually regarded, along with existing revenue and assets. The objective of the money may also be a good issue-a established expense opportunity may have a lot more appeal compared to a good misdirected concept for just about any new cafe. One particular essential point may be the income to credit card debt ratio through the customer. Can the customer have the ability to pay the loan back again interest? Professional loan companies basically 'sell' income, consequently debtors must be aware just how much funding actually 'costs' when it comes to real cash.

Ang Lee's 3D 'Life of Pi' opens NY film festival

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Once considered impossible to make, the big-screen 3D adaptation of the bestselling novel "Life of Pi" opened the 50th New York Film Festival on Friday, marking another advance in digital filmmaking.

The movie's director, Ang Lee, hit the red carpet at the big-budget movie's world premiere, with the black-tie audience getting the first glimpse of the spiritual story of a boy stranded on a boat with a tiger. It kicked off the screenings of more than 160 films over 17 days at the New York festival.

One of the world's most respected movie showcases, the festival typically emphasizes the art of cinema by focusing on the best films from the year's European festivals rather than Hollywood-style premieres. But the event is still seen as an important step in gathering buzz as Hollywood's awards season gets going.

More splashy world premieres than usual are on this year's schedule, including "Sopranos" maker David Chase's film feature debut, "Not Fade Away" and Robert Zemeckis' first live-action film "Flight," starring Denzel Washington, which will close the festival.

"Life of Pi" uses computer-generated imagery to bring a cinematic feel to the tale of a Hindu boy who survives a shipwreck and gets stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a spotted hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.

It is director Lee's riskiest film to date, even after 2005's "Brokeback Mountain," for which he won the best director Oscar. That film generated controversy for breaking barriers about gay portrayals on screen.

The 57-year-old Taiwanese born-director told the premiere on Friday night the film took four years to make and he joked about learning the hard way the difficulties of making a film in 3D predominantly set in the middle of the ocean portraying a host of zoo animals.

"'Life of Pi' was such an incredible story I just couldn't help myself, I had to tell this story," he said to audience applause. "This was an incredible journey for me."

DIRECTOR FOUND NOVEL 'MIND-BOGGLING'

With a budget of nearly $100 million, the film that opens in November in the United States is considered one of the riskier holiday season films.

Early reviews posted on Friday were mixed. The Hollywood reporter called it "exceptionally beautiful" and appealing to diverse audiences. Variety called it visually stunning but lacking in dramatic tension and grit.

Lee told reporters earlier on Friday that he read the novel soon after its release in 2001, and found it "mind-boggling." But he added, "I remember thinking to myself, nobody in their right mind" would transfer it to film due to the technical difficulties of filming the story.

Spurred on by its spiritual message, Lee agreed to make the movie and saw 3D as the only way to realize it, even before "Avatar" in 2009 broke through as a box-office bonanza for 3D movies.

"Life of Pi" stars novice Indian actor Suraj Sharma, who was plucked from more than 3,000 hopefuls. The book's author, Canadian writer Yann Martel, said he never imagined the film adaptation. "It was cinematic in my mind but I never thought I would actually see it on the screen, that it would be too complicated to do," he said.

Other films looking to gain favor with critics and audiences coming off showings at earlier festivals include Michael Haneke's "Amour," Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills," Noah Baumbach's black-and-white ode to New York, "Frances Ha," starring Greta Gerwig, and Chile director Pablo Larrain's "No."

Risk Reward Balanced at Masco - Zacks.com

We have maintained a Neutral recommendation on Masco Corporation (MAS - Analyst Report) following appraisal of second quarter 2012 results.

Masco Corporation?s adjusted earnings of 10 cents per share in the second quarter of 2012 missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny due to lower-than-expected revenues. However, earnings jumped 66% from the prior-year quarter.

Masco?s net sales of $2.0 billion in the reported quarter missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.08 billion. Revenues were flat with the prior-year quarter, hurt significantly by currency headwinds, slowing remodeling activity in the U.S. and challenges in the cabinetry business. Management also lowered its expectations for the second half due to volatility in North American repair/remodel markets and challenges in Europe.

Masco Corporation manufactures, sells, and installs home improvement and building products. Its main products and services include plumbing products, cabinets and related products, installation and other services, decorative architectural products, and other specialty products. The company is a leading cabinetry manufacturer in the U.S. and holds the largest share in faucets and kitchen cabinets. The company owns some of the popular brands like KraftMaid and Merillat cabinets, Delta and Hansgrohe faucets, Behr paint and Milgard windows.

Masco?s Cabinet business has been sluggish for sometime mainly because the repair and remodel spending trends have slowed in the U.S. and the dealer segment is not showing any major traction. Moreover, the company is facing challenges in Europe. As a result of continuous underperformance, management had to lower its profit expectations from this business for the second half of 2012.

Despite the short-term headwinds, we like the long-term fundamentals of Masco. We believe that the company?s leadership brands, its continued focus on innovation and new product launches can help drive growth in the long term.

Moreover, the U.S. housing industry which was until now fragile has begun to show some signs of improvement. Housing demand is improving, affordability is increasing and prices are stabilizing. As the housing conditions improve, demand for new home construction is gaining traction which will eventually lead to higher demand for repair, remodel activity.

The company undertook several strategic initiatives to cope with the challenging U.S. homebuilding industry and other headwinds like raw material cost inflation. The initiatives included the improvement of underperforming businesses like Installation and Cabinet; leveraging its brands and continued innovation, reducing costs and strengthening the balance sheet. Masco?s restructuring initiatives are almost done and are expected to result in about $175 million of gross cost reduction excluding the impact of inflation in 2012.

Empowering Non-Profits to Drive Positive Change via Social Media ...

Charities stand to gain significant advantageImage in community outreach and fundraising when they involve themselves in Social Media marketing strategies. According to the second annual Social Charity Index by Visceral Business, the top 100 charities in the UK have a combined seven million likes/followers on Facebook and 3.7 million followers on Twitter. ?

Although these numbers indicate strong opportunity in reaching individuals and opening doors to engaging people in the community to support a cause, they can also be misleading. Charities and non-profit organizations, like businesses, are just starting to understand social media. The findings in the report support the idea that although presence on social sites is growing and being adopted by many charities, the most efficient strategies for tangible results are yet to be fully applied.

Challenges Faced By Non-Profits

Non-Profits face significant challenges, in understanding how to maximize the impact they can have using social media. According to Anne McCrossan, is the Founding Partner of Visceral Business, "There's something of a disconnect going on at the moment. Charities are ticking the boxes in terms of using social media for reach, and to broadcast messages as they do with conventional communication channels, but aren't necessarily utilising the full potential that can be brought to the party when it comes to supporters wanting to share their own involvement in fundraising activities.", she explains in this article in The Guardian, where she goes on to explain that only 9 out of the 100 charities in the Top 100 are using a social leadership and engagement style yielding content that is standing out as "sharable" on Facebook.

Goal Setting for Non-Profits

The information in the report supports several of the observations I have been making in the recent months around what charities need to understand in running social media based outreach campaigns.

Traditional outreach methods have to be adapted to really zero in on the engagement factors, and focus less on measuring success by numbers of "likes" or follows. ?

Non-profits need to be focused on interaction and development of true community participation and support, rather than on increasing numbers of fans. An engaged fan is worth significantly more than an empty "like". Someone who likes your Facebook page or follows you on Twitter and never opens dialogue is as useful as a walking zombie - there is no energy, enthusiasm or desire to share coming from these people. As an organisation you need to question the value.

Much like any other marketing strategy, the non-profit organisation must first identify who their target donors and business partners are, and using this profile create content and communications to reach these key individuals or businesses. The critical element, however, is then being able to move these people into action.

As the study suggests, being sharable is a driving factor to success. How can you achieve being sharable?

  • Provide content that emotionally moves or entertains your target community. Give them something of value to share - something to talk about . Always ask yourself the question "Why does my target community care about this?" and "What would make them share this?" Although words an certainly be powerful, on social networks items such as video and photos more quickly communicate a message than text. You have very limited time to capture someones attention - share something that will not only entice them to learn more, but that they will feel like sharing with their friends. This can be funny, this can be touching, or even motivational. Non-Profits have to think outside the box - the more creative and interactive they can be the better.
  • Develop creative outreach projects. Give fans the opportunity to be the "star". The goal of the social media sites must include initiatives to recognise contributions, ideas & involvement of fans. Whether this involves sharing pictures of fans at real life events, or creating opportunities for fans to submit content that the organisation will then turn around highlight. The best plans will be the ones where the fans are driving content in support of the cause.

Non-Profits Are Stretched Thin

In NGO outreach I have done, through my work with the Aviva Community Fund Competition the most common reason I have heard when I encourage non-profits to get involved is the statement "We just don't have the time". Astounding to me, as taking the time would immediately qualify these grass-roots organizations to qualify for a share of $1,000,000 of funding that Aviva gives away to non-profits with engaged communities every year!?

Non-profits have to understand that the value in putting the time and effort into online activities is huge. Rather than reaching one person at a time with mailings or phone calls, the stronger and more interesting their communications online are, the more likely it is that one simple posting could reach hundreds if not thousands of people simply by being sharable.

The choice seems pretty straightforward to me: Write a letter or make a phone call that will reach one person - and end there OR produce some content that will reach several people and if it's engaging, will be shared - multiplying reach to indefinite potential. What do you think?

If I were stretched thin, I would be interested in the increased efficiency social media offers.

?

The Greatest Challenge :

Understanding How To Keep Engagement Going

Being Responsive as interactions occur and being proactive in creating opportunity for interaction is key. Too many NGO's build their numbers, insert one or two interactions a day, then let their sites go on auto-pilot. Seizing and creating opportunity is essential to a successful strategy. Using tools to monitor keywords in the online space, doing searches for people who might be interested in supporting the cause are all important, but not as important with what you do once you have these contacts and opportunities. Ignite curiosity, spark dialogue then nurture it.

As non-profit organisations start to understand the true potential in social networks, and how engagement needs to be the foremost goal, a great deal of focus will likely change in their approach and we may start to see a great deal more "social good" in our online environments.

People look for positivity, for ways to look good, for ways to show support - the non-profits who embrace this idea and provide these opportunities for the members of their community while promoting their cause are the ones who stand to gain the most ground in their efforts.

I am honored to be in Delaware this weekend discussing this topic at Pod Camp East, in my talk entitled: "Cultivating zombies or activating community?Non-profits challenges competing in the
social media world" - if you happen to be in the area, it would be great to have you join the dialogue as we discuss and examine how to truly empower non-profits with social media tools.

The 2012 Social Charity Index provides some great supporting insight... I will end my post with another quote from the article in the Guardian by Ann McCrossan,

"By becoming a lot more distributed, and by empowering people as agents of social change, the most effective social charities are making great gains, with access to ever increasing numbers of receptive users. The findings of the study suggest charities can convert the loyalty of their supporters into direct and interactive involvement, and generate cost savings by doing so through their use of social business planning and networked media. Forget Facebook "likes" ? think, instead, 'formative moments'."

If we can empower NGO's in our communities to use social media for social good and increase community engagement, we all stand to gain as we take these steps and use technology to make this world a truly better place.

  • What challenges do you see non-profits facing?
  • Do you think NGO's in your area understand how to effectively use social media for outreach and fundraising, or do you think they still struggling?
  • What strategies would you suggest to help charities create "formative moments"? Any good examples to share?

No more luck: No. 8 Stanford 17-13 by Huskies

SEATTLE (AP) ? All night, Steve Sarkisian felt if he could just get the ball past the first, stout wave of Stanford's defense, the opportunity was there for Washington to make big plays.

It happened only twice and thanks to a stunning defensive effort by the Huskies, it was enough Washington to pull out the upset of the eighth-ranked Cardinal.

"The way we executed in the most critical moments, that's what I'm most proud of those guys for," Sarkisian said.

Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass from Keith Price, broke a tackle and the line of scrimmage and raced 35 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:53 left, and Washington rallied from 10 points down to stun No. 8 Stanford 17-13 on Thursday night.

Trailing 13-3 late in the third quarter, the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) got a 61-yard touchdown sprint from running back Bishop Sankey on fourth-and-1 for their first offensive touchdown against an FBS opponent since the first quarter of the opener against San Diego State.

Then Washington put together a nine-play drive that included another fourth-down conversion and was capped by Williams' catch-and-run that gave the Huskies their first lead.

It was Washington's first win over a top 10 ranked opponent since its upset of then-No. 3 USC back in 2009, Steve Sarkisian's first season at Washington. And it was thanks to an inspired defensive effort that was the opposite of a year ago when Stanford (3-1, 1-1) bulldozed the Huskies to the tune of 446 yards rushing and 65 points.

If nothing else, new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox earned his lofty salary with a unique scheme that stymied Stanford's power attack.

"Against Stanford we know what they were going to do, we knew they were going to try and power the ball down on our throat like they did the last four years and it's worked," Washington safety Justin Glenn said. "But coach Wilcox just told us focus on each play. If something happens, erase it and focus on the next play. We kept battling down after down."

Washington's student section poured on to the turf of CenturyLink Field after Price took a knee for the final time. It was a crucial win for the Huskies in the first game of a schedule that only gets tougher next week at No. 2 Oregon before returning home to host No. 13 USC.

Price finished 19 of 37 for 177 yards and the touchdown toss to Williams. Sankey had 144 yards on 20 carries after Stanford's defense had allowed just 124 yards rushing combined in the first three games of the season.

But for all the offensive fireworks the Huskies playmakers showed at key times, this victory rested with the Washington defense.

Given extra time to prepare for the Cardinal with a bye last weekend, Wilcox used every minute of it to devise a defensive scheme to slow Stanford's rushing attack.

Most notably, Wilcox regularly had eight or nine defenders near the line of scrimmage, daring Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes to beat them through the air. Stanford went more than 21 minutes of the first half without gaining a first down and Nunes couldn't lead a winning drive in the closing seconds.

Stanford finished with just 235 yards of total offense, the fewest yards allowed by Washington since the 2010 Holiday Bowl against Nebraska. The Cardinal were held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since Oct. 27, 2007 at Oregon State, a 23-6 Stanford loss.

Stanford finished 5 of 18 on third downs and had only one drive of longer than 50 yards. Nunes, the replacement for Andrew Luck, finished 18 of 37 for 170 yards. But the most important factor was Washington's ability to control Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor.

Last year, Taylor ran for 138 yards against Washington and had 153 yards rushing in the upset of then-No. 2 USC on Sept. 15. He finished with 75 yards on 21 carries, none of them longer than 7 yards.

"We didn't play well enough to win," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "We didn't make the throws we needed to make. We didn't make the catches we needed to make. We didn't sustain our blocks in the running game as long as we should have. We got outplayed tonight."

Washington started its winning drive at the 35 with 8:57 left and converted on fourth-and-1 at their own 44 with Dezden Petty bulling for 2 yards. They eventually got down the Stanford 35 with 5 minutes remaining. That's when Sarkisian called for the quick screen to his star receiver. Williams broke the tackle of Terrence Brown at the line of scrimmage then sprinted down the sideline ahead of safety Ed Reynolds, who caught up enough to knock the ball loose but only after Williams had crossed the goal line.

"I put my head down, I think that's one of my strengths is putting my head down and fighting through tackles and that's what happened on that play," Williams said.

Stanford, whose only touchdown came on Trent Murphy's 40-yard interception return in the third quarter, tried to put together one last drive. Ty Montgomery dropped a potential touchdown at the Washington 5,and Stanford eventually faced fourth-and-4 at the Huskies 34 with 2 minutes left. With the defense spread out, Nunes tried to throw a fade route down the sideline to 6-foot-8 tight end Levine Toilolo. But the ball was poorly thrown and Desmond Trufant was in position to intercept the pass at the 8 with 1:46 left. Stanford used its final two timeouts to force third-and-4, but Ben Gardner jumped offside giving the Huskies a first down and the clock ran out.

"I've lost to Stanford every time since I've been here. It's great to be on the other side this time," Trufant said.

Students, experts recoil at alcohol enema case

(AP Photo/Knoxville (AP Photo/Amy Smotherman Burgess,File)

(AP) ? Before an unruly Tennessee party ended with a student hospitalized for a dangerously high blood alcohol level, most people had probably never heard of alcohol enemas.

Thanks to the drunken exploits of a fraternity at the University of Tennessee, the bizarre way of getting drunk is giving parents, administrators and health care workers a new fear.

When Alexander "Xander" Broughton, 20, was delivered to the hospital after midnight on Sept. 22, his blood alcohol level was measured at 0.448 percent ? nearly six times the intoxication that defines drunken driving in the state. Injuries to his rectum led hospital officials to fear he had been sodomized.

Police documents show that when an officer interviewed a fellow fraternity member about what happened, the student said the injuries had been caused by an alcohol enema.

"It is believed that members of the fraternity were utilizing rubber tubing inserted into their rectums as a conduit for alcohol," according to a police report.

While Broughton told police he remembered participating in a drinking game with fellow members of the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter, he denied having an alcohol enema. Police concluded otherwise from evidence they found at the frat house, including boxes of Franzia Sunset Blush wine.

"He also had no recollection of losing control of his bowels and defecating on himself," according to a university police report that includes photos of the mess left behind in the fraternity house after the party.

Broughton did not respond to a cellphone message seeking comment on Friday.

The university responded with swift investigation and a decision Friday to shutter the fraternity until at least 2015. The national Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity organization also accepted the withdrawal of the campus charter.

Alcohol enemas have been the punch lines of YouTube videos, a stunt in a "Jackass" movie and a song by the punk band NOFX called "Party Enema." But Corey Slovis, chairman of department of emergency medicine and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said actually going through with the deed can have severe consequences.

"It's something that offers no advantages, while at the same time risking someone's life," he said.

The procedure bypasses the stomach, accelerating the absorption rate, Slovis said. Pouring the alcohol through a funnel can increase the amount of alcohol consumed because it's hard to gauge how much is going in.

"When you're dumping it into your rectum, often via a funnel, one or two ounces seems like such a minuscule amount," he said. Ingesting more can create unconsciousness quite quickly, he explained.

The effects have been fatal in at least one case. An autopsy performed after the death of a 58-year-old Texas man in 2004 showed he had been given an enema with enough sherry to have a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. Negligent homicide charges were later dropped against his wife, who said she gave him the enema.

Students walking across campus this week generally responded with sighs and eye rolls when asked about the allegations.

"It's like a big joke," said Erica Davis, a freshman from Hendersonville. "Because who does that?"

Gordon Ray, a senior from Morristown, said the details of the case caught him off guard, but not the fact that fraternity members would be overdoing it with alcohol.

"It is definitely over the top," said Ray. "But it doesn't surprise me, I don't guess."

The harm the news has done to the university's national reputation was on the mind of several students.

"If someone wants to be stupid, then they should do it where it won't affect anyone else," said Marlon Alessandra, freshman from Independence, Va.

James E. Lange, who coordinates alcohol and drug abuse prevention strategies at San Diego State University, said alcohol enemas aren't a common occurrence on campuses, though normal consumption still contributes to hundreds of student deaths annually. And many of those can be attributed to reckless attitudes about the consequences of heavy drinking, he said.

"It's not unusual to hear that students are drinking to get drunk," he said.

Lange said he hopes students don't draw the wrong lessons from the University of Tennessee incident.

"Students and people in general are pretty good at denying that they are at risk for whatever happened to someone else," he said. "So they can look at something like this and say 'I'm OK because I would never do that.'

"However, they may be drinking heavily, or doing things like mixing alcohol with prescription meds that is putting them at serious risk," he said.

To Tennessee freshman Cody Privett of Sevierville, there's nothing appealing about the incident on his campus.

"It's stupid, it's an unfortunate situation," said Privett, of Sevierville. "I mean there's partying, and then there's other things."

Indonesia's Aceh revokes palm permit after legal challenge

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's Aceh province has revoked a controversial permit issued to a palm oil firm accused of breaching a ban on forest clearing, a spokesman said on Friday, in a rare climbdown following a legal challenge by environmental groups.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has set a goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by saving Indonesia's dwindling tropical rainforests, the world's third-largest, a pledge that won the promise of $1 billion from Norway should he succeed.

But the effort is being hampered by soaring global demand for palm oil, used in everything from biscuits to biofuel. Indonesia is the world's top producer of the edible oil, whose exports earn the country $20 billion a year.

Last year, the governor of Aceh breached a two-year ban on issuing permits to log and convert forests by giving permission for PT Kallista Alam develop 1,605 hectares (4,000 acres) of swamp, which includes protected peatlands.

The Aceh governor's move prompted legal action from environmental groups and probes by the police and government bodies, which led to the permit being revoked this week.

A spokesman for the Aceh province said the permit had been revoked on Thursday, and notification sent to Kallista Alam.

"It is important that there is rule of law in business and investing in Aceh, which provides benefits to the community," Muhammad Zulfikar, director of the Aceh chapter of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), said in a statement.

Officials of PT Kallista Alam could not immediately be reached for comment.

Former Aceh governor Irwandi Yusuf issued the permit to open 1,605 hectares of land for palm oil in the Tripa peatland area in August last year.

In the last few years, Indonesia has seen rapid growth in production of palm oil, with output this year expected to be between 23 million and 25 million metric tons (27.6 million tons), with around 18 million metric tons exported.

The 10 Worst States For Retirees - Retirement Homes

There?s no shortage of retirement advisors online who recommend the best cities, states and even countries for retirement. If you?re looking for lower income taxes, there are places for that. If you want miles of sandy beaches, there are places for that.

And if you dream of being close to friends and family, you?re probably there already. But are all retirement destinations created equal? If there are excellent retirement destinations out there, what are the worst?

As reported recently by AARP.org, the 10 worst states for retirees are:

1/ Illinois
2/ California
3/ New York
4/ Rhode Island
5/ New Jersey
6/ Ohio
7/ Wisconsin
8/ Massachusetts
9/ Connecticut
10/ Nevada

The reasons for these 10 states varied, but they ranged from the poor financial health of the Illinois and California state governments, high property taxes in New York and Wisconsin, unemployment and cold temperatures in Ohio, and a high volume of home foreclosures in Nevada. As well, Social Security in Connecticut is taxed, so people who rely on that as a source of income don?t keep the entire amount.

But if you?re looking for a beachfront home in California, or if you want to be close to your family in Ohio, then don?t let a list deter you. But when considering relocating, think about all factors before you move.

Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process ...

Home ? Editorial ? Information Technology Parks to boost Philippine Business Process Outsourcing industry

Manila, Philippines ? INFORMATION Technology (IT) Parks are rising in the provinces and in Metro Manila to provide the infrastructure and connectivity needed to boost the robust growth of the country?s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. The new IT Parks outside Metro Manila are in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Iloilo, Bi?an, Tarlac, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Dasmari?as, Dumaguete, General Santos, Lipa, Naga, San Fernando, and Urdaneta, and in the municipalities of Marilao, Bulacan; Bacong and Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Rosario and Silang, Cavite.

BPO firms are the predominant locators in IT parks registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. The government offers tax incentives to BPO firms, including value-added tax and income tax exemption. The IT-BPO industry is today one of the country?s biggest job creators. In 2011, the sector recorded $11 billion investments and created 638,000 jobs. For 2012, it expects $13 billion revenues on a labor force of 764,000. By 2016, it projects $27 billion revenues and jobs for 1.3 million Filipino workers.

The rising demand for call center services leads the BPO boom. The Philippines holds a major portion of the global outsourcing market, due to the English proficiency of Filipinos. Call centers count among its clients giant multinationals. Pharmaceutical firms outsource their medical transcriptions in the country.

This year, several grants and subsidies were earmarked by various agencies and institutions for the sector?s educational and technical development. The Asian Development Bank granted P27.3 million in technical assistance for skills enhancement. State universities nationwide were allocated a budget of P125 million to fund IT-BPO-based programs. A P450-million subsidy was set aside by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for training. The Information and Communication Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology allocated P350 million to support the IT-BPO industry.

We wish Philippine Economic Zone Authority Director General Dr. Lilia B. de Lima and Information and Communication Technology Office Executive Director Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, all the best and success in their unwavering support to promote the global competitiveness of the information and communication technology sector. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

'I care,' Romney declares, as he duels with Obama in Ohio

Both Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in Ohio on Wednesday. With Obama gaining more and more of an edge in the polls, Romney tried to appeal to voters, telling them he cares about all Americans.

Slipping in states that could sink his presidential bid, Republican Mitt Romney declared Wednesday that "I care about the people of America" and can do more than President Barack Obama to improve their lives. In an all-day Ohio duel, Obama scoffed that a challenger who calls half the nation "victims" was unlikely to be of much help.

Romney's approach reflected what he is up against: a widening Obama lead in polls in key states such as Ohio, the backlash from a leaked video in which he disparages Obama supporters as government-dependent people who see themselves as victims, and a campaign imperative to make his policy plans more plain.

With under six weeks to go, and just one week before the first big debate, Obama's campaign reveled in the latest public polling ? but tried to crush any sense of overconfidence. "If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," said campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki.

The day's setting was Ohio, where Obama's momentum has seemed to be growing. It's also a state no Republican has won the White House without carrying.

Romney, eager to project confidence and brush aside suggestions that he was faltering, went after working-class voters outside Columbus and Cleveland before rolling to Toledo. Obama rallied college crowds at Bowling Green State University and Kent State University, reminding Ohioans their state allows them to start cast ballots next week. Early voting has already begun in more than two dozen other states.

For Romney, in his appearances and in a new TV ad in which he appeals straight to the camera, it was time for plain talk to contrast himself with Obama, and to mince no words about his expectations.

"There are so many people in our country who are hurting right now. I want to help them. I know what it takes," Romney told the crowd in Westerville. "I care about the people of America, and the difference between me and Barack Obama is I know what to do."

That message so late in the campaign ? a presidential nominee declaring his concern for all the people of the country ? was part of his widening effort to rebound from his caught-on-video comments at a fundraiser.

In those comments, made last May but only recently revealed, Romney said "47 percent of the people" pay no federal income tax, will vote for Obama no matter what, see themselves as victims, think the government must care for them and do not "take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

It's a refrain we've often heard here at Green Car Reports and elsewhere: environmentally friendly technology and products are great, but consumers won't adopt them until they're competitively priced.

Now, research firm GfK has conducted a study to prove (or disprove) that hypothesis, and the results are...interesting.

GfK's latest?Green Gauge survey asked consumers across America to answer questions about their shopping habits. Here are the major takeaways:

  • A whopping?93% of those surveyed said that within the past year, they've done something to conserve energy at home. (Respondents weren't asked what they did, however, so it's unclear whether they achieved conservation through, say, purchases of more energy-efficient appliances or through actions, like adjusting thermostats a few degrees hotter in summer.)
  • Also within the past year, 77% have done something to conserve water.
  • Over the past 12 months, 73% of respondents purchased a product made from organic materials. Though GfK didn't ask what those products were, the firm notes that food (for both humans and pets) as well as cleaning supplies and apparel have seen huge growth in green product sales over the past five years.
  • What tools are consumers using to go green? Many say that smartphones have been hugely useful. On average, 29% have used apps?to do things like monitor household energy consumption or track public transportation. (We'll see if that number drops now that transit-free Apple Maps has become the default mapping app for handsets using iOS 6.)
  • But the stop-and-start U.S. economy is taking a toll on consumers' willingness to go green. In 2008, before we'd hit bottom in the Great Recession, 70% of GfK's survey participants said they'd pay more for energy-efficient lightbulbs. Today, that figure stands at 60%.
  • On the auto front, it's worse. In 2008, an impressive 62% of respondents said they'd be willing to pay more for a vehicle that's more environmentally friendly. Today, that figure has dropped 13 points to 49%.

What's especially disconcerting about that last statistic is that today's auto shoppers have many, many more eco-friendly options than they did four years ago, from hybrids to electric cars to fuel-efficient conventional vehicles. That suggests that today's green-car manufacturers are going to have a tough time selling those new models. And like a nasty Catch-22, the prices of those vehicles won't truly go down until sales pick up and economies of scale kick in.

Thankfully for eco-friendly car fans, there is some cause to be optimistic. Fuel-efficiency remains a major concern among shoppers -- and it'll likely continue to be so, as long as fuel prices stay high.

Then, too, there's Toyota's new (thought admittedly vague) plan to roll out quite a few hybrids over the next few years. If anyone can jump-start the green car market, it's probably the world's largest automaker.

Would you pay more for an eco-friendly ride? How much more? Drop us a line, or leave a note in the comments below.

Suspect in killing of Los Angeles woman was actor

(AP) ? Authorities say a man who fell to his death after killing an elderly Los Angeles woman was an actor who appeared in the FX television show "Sons of Anarchy."

The Los Angeles County coroner's office on Thursday identified him as 28-year-old Johnny Lewis. He may be best known as the actor who played Kip "Half Sack" Epps on the biker drama for two seasons.

The woman killed is identified as 81-year-old Catherine Davis.

Police tell the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/Or6s0E ) that she was found dead in a driveway in the Los Feliz area Wednesday and Lewis was found dead near a wall.

Investigators say Lewis apparently beat the woman to death and fought with two men before climbing a wall and falling to his death.

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes near Mexico's Baja Peninsula

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the southern tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, on Tuesday and caused panic, but local officials said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake's epicenter was located 46 miles north of La Paz, Mexico, and was centered in the Gulf of California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"It felt pretty strong," said Ivan Calderon, a Baja California Sur state civil protection official, adding there were no reports of damages or injuries.

"So far there have just been some reports of people panicking, but nothing serious," Calderon said.

He said school was suspended across the state on Wednesday while officials examined sites for damages. Some other public buildings would also be closed Wednesday for checks, he said.

A magnitude 6 earthquake is capable of causing severe damage. Four more tremors, magnitude 4.8 or less, followed the bigger quake, all clustered north of La Paz, the USGS said.

The southern part of Mexico's Baja Peninsula is sparsely populated outside of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, and the tourist resort of Los Cabos, located about 98 miles to the south.

New strategy for battling HIV

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? New research showing how the HIV virus targets "veterans" or memory T-cells could change how drugs are used to stop the virus, Mason researchers say.

The research will appear in the Journal of Biological Chemistry's October edition and currently is available online.

"It's a big breakthrough for us," says Yuntao Wu, an author of the study and professor at the Mason-based National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases. "I think this will impact the field."

Helper T-cells support the body's immune system by organizing forces to fight off infection. The HIV virus hijacks helper T-cells. When helper T-cell numbers plummet, the body is vulnerable to disease.

Not all helper T-cells are the same; some are experienced ones called memory helper T-cells, and others, naive cells or "virgin" cells, haven't encountered an infection. Mason researchers studied why HIV preferentially goes after memory helper T-cells, while shunning their close colleagues. Memory and naive T-cells appear similar.

"In the body, HIV is able to kill most memory helper cells," says Weifeng Wang, PhD Biosciences '12, the study's main author. "We wanted to pursue what makes the difference between memory and naive T-cells on a molecular level."

Unlike naive helper T-cells, memory T-cells are on the go, and much more mobile. And it's that momentum that attracts the HIV virus and makes the memory cell vulnerable, says Wang, who's currently a research fellow in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School.

When a memory cell moves, inside the cell, it looks like a waterfall on the moving edge. "It's called 'treadmilling'," Wu says. "The cytoskeleton or the cell's supporting bone is acting like a muscle. The treadmilling of cytoskeleton pushes the cell to migrate. That's how it pushes itself. In the past year we've been studying how HIV infects those memory cells. It has to go to the center, into the nucleus. It has to go past the cytoskeleton barriers to go into the center. For many years we didn't understand how the virus could cross such a structure. It's like a wall. It has to cross that wall."

HIV jumps over the wall by exploiting the cell's treadmilling process, Wu says. "The HIV virus uses a receptor to attach to the cell for entry," he says. "When the virus touches that receptor it's like someone ringing the doorbell. That triggers a signal -- someone comes out and opens the door. Now the HIV virus can start the treadmill to 'walk' along the cytoskeleton towards the center. If the virus goes to naive cells, it cannot do it. Naive cells aren't sensitive enough. The cytoskeleton of these 'virgin' cells is different from the memory cells, and it is not easy for the virus to start the treadmilling process."

HIV's ability to mutate makes it difficult for our body to control it. "It can mutate very fast," Wu says. "You may have a lot of memory cell soldiers there but they are not able to recognize the HIV virus. They remember one guy, but this guy changes his face so they don't remember him. That's why our immune system is not effective against HIV. On top of that, the virus kills lots of your memory helper cells. Without sufficient help, your immune system is in complete dysfunction, and now you don't have an immune system."

HIV's knack for mutating makes it a tough target for drugs, Wang says. By shifting the focus to the cell, away from the virus itself, researchers may find a new way to tackle the virus, he says.

"Basically, our new strategy will be finding a cellular target, something HIV needs to depend on," Wu says. "It's as if the virus says 'give me a house.' The cell is the house. The house has to have electricity and everything so it can live there. Our approach is to look for something the virus needs to live in that house and then to reduce it or shut it down. The challenge will be if you shut that down, that it doesn't impact normal cell functions. It's a very tricky balance. You want to kill the virus but not healthy cells along with it."

Wu is looking at existing drugs, including those used for cancer. "There is something shared between cancer cells and HIV- infected cells because cancer cells also like to migrate. So some drugs that are used to slow down cancer migration could also be used to treat HIV."

As part of his doctoral thesis, Wang spent six years pursuing why HIV attacks memory cells. Failure is a part of research, he says. He had to change the experiment conditions multiple times before finding success. "It's like when you get lost in the woods at night; it's difficult to find the way out."

Mentors and colleagues spurred Wang on. Sheer persistence and hours in the lab eventually won out. "It's very challenging to do scientific discovery," Wang says. "There is no precedent."

NYC DC AIDS Research Ride partially funded the research for three years, Wu says. Also, a $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, is slated for the project from June 2009 until May 2013.
