Stone Roses, Blur, Phoenix headline Coachella 2013 music fest

(Reuters) - British rockers Blur and The Stone Roses will be joining French indie-rock band Phoenix and Red Hot Chili Peppers to headline this year's three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, organizers said on Thursday.

The annual music festival, set for two consecutive weekends in April, has become one of the largest U.S. music festivals, attracting more than 80,000 people to the desert town of Indio, California.

After featuring electronic music DJs such as Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack and David Guetta among the top-billed acts last year, this year's Coachella sees the music festival return to its rock roots.

The festival will take place on the weekends of April 12-14 and 19-21, with the same line-up both weekends.

Blur and The Stone Roses, who recently reunited after a long hiatus, will headline Friday. Phoenix, which has a new album coming out this spring, will take Saturday's primetime spot.

Los Angeles rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers, who previously headlined the festival in 2003 and 2007, will close out the festival in the Sunday headlining slot.

Other anticipated names on the line-up this year include hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan, Icelandic indie band Sigur Ros, Grammy nominees The Lumineers and electro-rock music group The Postal Service.

Previous years have seen acts such as Prince, Kings of Leon, Beastie Boys, Madonna, Muse, Pixies, Jay-Z and Kanye West take the headlining slots.

Last year, hip hop veterans Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre grabbed headlines as they resurrected late rapper Tupac via hologram on stage for the closing night of the festival.

Ticket prices start at $349 and they will go on sale on January 29 at 10 a.m. PST (1800 GMT). This year, organizers said there will be no layaway option for those wishing to pay for their tickets in installments.

Obesity at Davos: Forum asks pharma, big food to solve problem ...

Coke obesity sugar

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Obesity, a major factor in diabetes and heart disease, imposes costs on both public and private sectors and is a drag on economic growth, but business leaders meeting in Davos can't agree on what they can or should do to address it.

The World Economic Forum has some notable past achievements in healthcare, such as galvanizing support for the fight against AIDS and the vaccination of children in poor countries, but tackling the rise in obesity promises to be a much more complicated task.

"There are huge interests involved. The question is how can we align interests? Industry sees the impact on their bottom line. They need a healthy workforce and healthy consumers," said WEF health and healthcare expert Olivier Raynaud.

The WEF estimates a cumulative $47 trillion of output might be lost in the next 20 years due to non-communicable diseases and mental health problems, with obesity to blame for 44 percent of the diabetes burden and 23 percent of heart disease costs.

One look at the list of the strategic partners of the WEF shows how many vested interests are at play - food and drink companies are blamed for feeding the crisis, while drug manufacturers profit from soaring rates of diabetes.

There are also issues of consumer choice to take into account, and the fact that companies selling calorie-dense foods often also make a range of healthier alternatives.

"We could stop selling ice cream, but people are still going to want to eat ice cream," said Paul Bulcke, chief executive of food giant Nestle, which has been investing heavily in developing healthier products, including low-fat ice cream.

Just this week, Coca-Cola, whose chief executive Muhtar Kent is one of the co-chairs of this year's Davos gathering, launched a commercial on U.S. cable television that seeks to highlight the company's efforts in fighting obesity.

As the soft drink industry faces the threat of tighter regulation, the commercial notes that Coca-Cola sells about 180 low and no-calorie drinks and reminds viewers "if you eat and drink more calories than you burn off, you'll gain weight".

TOUGHER ISSUE THAN SMOKING

The WEF will host a private meeting on "healthy living" on Saturday of key players including executives from the food, healthcare and agriculture sectors as well as health regulators and ministers, seeking to get agreement on concrete action.

"To solve the issue of tobacco, we excluded tobacco companies. But excluding food and beverage, pharmaceuticals would be a big mistake," said the WEF's Raynard.

"The second mistake would be to only blame. The third mistake would be to be too simplistic, just focusing on reducing sugar, for example."

The British government announced this week that more food and drink companies have signed up to a voluntary pledge to cut the amount of sugar and calories in their products.

That is the kind of approach favoured by Nestle's Bulcke, who rejects tighter regulation: "It's not education alone, it's not diet alone. It's all that, plus healthy physical activity."

Alison Martin, a health specialist at insurer Swiss Re who is due to address a discussion on obesity with Bulcke on Saturday, said trying to fight the problem with the same kind of taxes or bans imposed on tobacco would not work.

"There is nothing inherently wrong with eating a hamburger or drinking a can of Coke as part of a balanced diet, so it's unlike smoking," she said. "That leads it to being a more difficult, thorny issue, which is clearly why we haven't been successful in tackling it to date."

Instead of focusing on counting calories, insurers like Swiss Re are developing policies aimed at encouraging healthier living by offering lower premiums, for example if clients promise to go to the gym or buy fruit and vegetables.

Khalid Al Falih, head of Saudi Aramco, the world's biggest oil producer, said the productivity of companies was already being undermined by the poor health of some employees.

"This situation is of special concern to us because we live in a region that has one of the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the world," he said as the WEF published new data supporting the case for more investment in workplace health.

Four out of five diabetics now live in low and middle-income countries, and global sales of diabetes medicines are expected to reach $48-$53 billion by 2016, up from $39.2 billion in 2011, according to research firm IMS Health.

"ALL YOU NEED IS SHOES"

Yasuchika Hasegawa, the CEO of drugmaker Takeda, which has interests in medicines for both diabetes and obesity, said such interventions were needed, given the deep-seated nature of the appetite for sweet and fatty foods.

"It's a fundamental problem. To fix the problem you have to change behaviour, but changing behaviour is the most difficult thing to do," he said.

Perhaps inspired by the fact that all but the very top VIPs have to trudge through snow to reach the WEF conference centre, the most popular prescription is to promote physical activity through simple measures like building more sidewalks.

"It is hard to get people to eat healthier, but we can get people to walk. All they need is shoes," said George Halvorson, head of U.S. healthcare firm Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, who spends at least 30 minutes a day on his treadmill.

Nike, another company with a clear agenda on the issue, recently commissioned a study estimating that 9 percent of all premature deaths worldwide are due to inactivity.

But Eva Jane-Llopis, WEF chronic disease expert, said government intervention - like the soda taxes so vehemently opposed by the soft drinks industry - are still needed.

"Everybody likes physical activity because it is not contentious, but it is not a silver bullet," she said.

"We need regulation to level the playing field. Everyone is going to have to do much more if we want to turn the tide, especially in middle-income countries."

Chelsea player charged by FA for kicking ball boy

LONDON (AP) ? The English Football Association charged Chelsea winger Eden Hazard on Friday for kicking a ball boy, a move that could add extra games to his three-match ban for violent conduct.

After reviewing footage, the FA said the standard suspension would be "clearly insufficient" and gave Hazard until Tuesday to respond to the charge.

Hazard was sent off Wednesday for kicking a ball boy in the 79th minute of the League Cup semifinal match against Swansea. The Belgian winger attempted to retrieve the ball after it had rolled out of play.

The 17-year-old ball boy refused to return the ball promptly and dropped down on top of it. Hazard aimed a kick underneath the teenager to release the ball.

Hazard and ball boy Charlie Morgan apologized to each other after the match and were spoken to by police. Morgan's family doesn't intend to press charges.

South Wales Police said Friday they were no longer involved in the matter, having been obliged to follow up after three complaints by members of the public.

In the FA's statement, the governing body said it will be reminding "all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times."

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said he was eager to move on.

"On a personal note I find it remarkable that there is any thought of police action," Jenkins said Friday. "Things are done in the heat of the moment and probably everybody looks back and wishes things had been done differently. We accept how things are and all move forward."

Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said any disciplinary action taken against Hazard by the club was an "internal" matter.

(AP) ? A Frenchwoman who had spent seven years in prison in Mexico on kidnapping charges was flying back to Paris on Thursday after Mexico's Supreme Court ordered her freed because of flaws in her trial, bringing a close to a case that had strained relations between the countries.

Florence Cassez's arrest, trial and 60-year prison sentence made her a cause celebre in France, where two consecutive presidents called for her release. Anti-crime activists in Mexico vigorously opposed the Wednesday decision to free her.

Cassez's flight left Mexico City's international airport at 9:25 p.m. local time (03:25 GMT) and was expected to arrive in Paris about 10 hours later.

Relatives of kidnap victims angrily shouted "Killer!" as a police convoy with sirens flashing escorted a sports utility vehicle out of the Mexico City prison where Cassez had been held.

The family and supporters of the 38-year-old Cassez, who was arrested in 2005 and convicted of helping her Mexican then-boyfriend run a kidnapping gang, celebrated the decision, saying she was innocent.

"I'm crazy with happiness, I can't say anything else," her mother, Charlotte Cassez, said in France. "I'm still struggling to believe it."

Earlier on Wednesday, a Mexican Supreme Court panel voted 3-2 to release Cassez because of procedural and rights violations during her arrest, including police staging a recreation of her capture for the media. The justices pointedly did not rule on her guilt or innocence, but said the violations of due process, the right to consular assistance and evidentiary rules were so grievous that they invalidated the original guilty verdict against her.

One justice originally proposed on Wednesday asking an appeals court to review her trial, omitting the tainted evidence; however, most justices on the panel indicated they would oppose that, and they then voted to simply release her.

"If she had been turned over to court custody promptly, if she had been allowed prompt consular assistance, this (raid) staging couldn't have taken place, and the whole affair would have been totally different," Justice Arturo Zaldivar said during discussion of the ruling.

Because the case was mishandled, the truth remains unknown, said the president of Mexico City's Human Rights Commission, Luis Gonzalez Placencia.

"In this country we can no longer ignore police obtaining evidence by tampering with it, by using torture, by staging raids," Gonzalez said. "We will never know whether Florence is guilty or innocent, but we know for certain there are specific people who violated due process."

Wednesday's ruling put another spotlight on Mexico's historically corrupt justice system and drew reactions from both countries' presidents.

"I want to recognize the Mexican justice system because it put the law first," French President Francois Hollande said on television. "That was the trust we put in it. And today we can say that between France and Mexico, we have the best relations that it is possible to have."

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said in a statement that he will "absolutely" respect the court's decision.

Agustin Acosta, an attorney for Cassez, called the ruling "a resounding message in favor of justice and respect for human rights." Police torture and fabrication of evidence have long been tolerated in Mexico.

Mexican police acknowledged they staged a raid on a ranch outside Mexico City to depict the hostages' rescue and Cassez's detention. After Cassez was detained and held incognito for a day, Mexican police hauled her back to the ranch and forced her to participate in the raid staged for television cameras, a type of display for the news media not unusual in Mexico.

The Frenchwoman said she had lived at the ranch, but did not know kidnapping victims were held there.

Cassez ultimately spent seven years in prison and became the center of a vigorous debate between Mexicans who say she was abused by the criminal justice system and those who say setting her free would only reinforce a sense that crimes such as kidnapping go unpunished.

The wife of one kidnap victim showed up on Wednesday as reporters gathered outside the Mexico City prison where Cassez had been held. Michelle Valadez said her husband, Ignacio, was kidnapped and held for three months by Cassez's boyfriend's gang in 2005.

"We paid the ransom, but they killed him anyway," she sobbed. "It's not fair what they've done to us, it's not fair they're freeing her."

Mexico has one of the world's highest kidnapping rates, and there has been increasing public pressure to halt what is seen as widespread impunity for criminals.

At least one victim identified Cassez as one of the kidnappers, though only by hearing her voice, not by seeing her.

It was not immediately clear how the ruling might affect the case against Cassez's ex-boyfriend Israel Vallarta, who is charged with allegedly leading the gang and is being tried separately.

But the ruling provoked a backlash from Mexican anti-crime activists, including Isabel Miranda de Wallace, who led a successful decade-long fight to bring her son's kidnappers to justice even though his body was never found.

"Today, they opened the door to impunity, today a lot of people are going to go free," Miranda de Wallace told news media. "We already live without public safety, now it's going to be worse."

Ezequiel Elizalde, a kidnap victim who testified against Cassez, told local media that the ruling discredited the Mexican justice system. "Get a weapon, arm yourself, and don't pay any attention to the government," he said.

Cassez was originally sentenced in 2008 to 96 years in prison for four kidnappings. The sentence was reduced to 70 years a year later when she was acquitted of one charge.

The case caused diplomatic tensions between France and Mexico. In 2011, Mexico said it would not participate in France's yearlong festival celebrating Mexican culture, after then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the festival should be used to draw attention to the Cassez case.

The trial underscored delays and irregularities that have long plagued Mexico's legal system.

Mexico in 2008 implemented a judicial reform that called for open trials and reinforced the principle of innocence until proven guilty. The old system, still in place in much of the country, was blamed for fostering corruption and confessions extracted by torture.

The Engadget Show 40: The Best of CES with Kaz Hirai, 50 Cent, Ken Block and Arianna Huffington

The craziest week of the tech year is at end, and we have to say, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Sure, it wasn't quite as epic as it has been in years past, but CES is still the show that sets the stage for the rest of 2013. By that measure, we may well be seeing an interesting shift. With the loss of Microsoft, some smaller companies have been using the show to make names for themselves amongst the 4K TVs released by the bigwigs like Samsung, Sony and LG. The Pebble smart watch, the Oculus Rift and the Razer Edge all scored big. We take a look at the products and discuss how things like crowdfunding are affecting the world of hardware startups.

We've also got interviews galore -- we'll be talking with Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, SMS Audio CEO (and rapper, we're told) 50 Cent, rally car driver Ken Block, Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, Stern Pinball CEO Gary Stern, MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis and CEA president Gary Shapiro among many, many others (including a very special appearance from Gallagher -- this is Vegas, after all). Daniel, the winner of our Bring a Reader to CES contest will show you what it's like going to the show for the first time and our editors discuss how this year's event compares to years past. And, of course, we've also got lots of floor time with our favorite gadgets from the show.

Toss on a comfortable pair of walking shoes, because it's time to do CES all over again.

Hosts: Tim Stevens, Brian Heater
Guests: Kaz Hirai, 50 Cent, Ken Block, Arianna Huffington, Gary Stern, Gary Shapiro, Daniel Orren, and many, many others
Producer: Ben Harrison
Executive Producers: Brian Heater, Joshua Fruhlinger

Xerox fourth-quarter profit tops Street view, shares up

(Reuters) - Xerox Corp reported quarterly earnings slightly above expectations on Thursday and reiterated its full-year targets as it restructures parts of its business.

Fourth-quarter revenue was flat at $5.9 billion and earnings per share, excluding items, were 30 cents. Analysts looked for $5.88 billion in revenue and EPS of 29 cent.

Xerox stock gained 2.2 percent to $7.75 in early trading.

For the first three month of 2013, Xerox expects earnings to be in a range of 23 cents to 25 cents per share. Analysts looked for 24 cents in the first quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company reiterated its full-year EPS target of $1.09 to $1.15 and forecast operating cash flow of $2.1 billion to $2.4 billion.

Some analysts called the outlook conservative.

Shannon Cross at Cross Research said the guidance "is likely conservative, given tailwinds from currency, significant product refreshes in technology, restructuring and easier comparisons."

She added that she anticipated the company would return cash to shareholders through a dividend, share repurchase and service-oriented acquisitions.

The Norwalk, Connecticut-based company said in November it was taking a $100 million restructuring charge as a result of a tougher economy and tighter corporate budgets.

Most of the restructuring focus is on the services segment, which handles anything from helping to manage toll systems to healthcare programs.

Xerox, which has its roots in the copier and printer business, said quarterly revenue from its services business was up 7 percent thanks to recurring contracts.

It now generates more than half of its revenue from its services businesses after its acquisition of Affiliated Computer Services Inc for $5.5 billion in 2009.

But new contract signings in the services segment declined 25 percent to $2.9 billion in last 12 months. Xerox said the drop was due to a decrease in very large deals and shorter contract lengths.

Still, it said the pipeline of future deals was strong with 6 percent year-on-year growth.

Revenue from the document technology business, which includes document systems, supplies, technical services and financing of products, was down 8 percent due to difficult economic and market conditions, Xerox said.

The company said it expected to feel the impact of a continued weak economic environment this year as well, but was optimistic that equipment sales would improve due to a refreshed line of products.

UCI-led studies identify cellular pathways involved in governing day-night pattern

Irvine, Calif., Jan. 22, 2013 UC Irvine-led studies have revealed the cellular mechanism by which circadian rhythms also known as the body clock modify energy metabolism and also have identified novel compounds that control this action. The findings point to potential treatments for disorders triggered by circadian rhythm dysfunction, ranging from insomnia and obesity to diabetes and cancer.

UC Irvine's Paolo Sassone-Corsi, one of the world's leading researchers on the genetics of circadian rhythms, led the studies and worked with international groups of scientists. Their results are detailed in two companion pieces appearing this week in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Circadian rhythms of 24 hours govern fundamental physiological functions in almost all organisms," said Sassone-Corsi, the Donald Bren Professor of Biological Chemistry. "The circadian clocks are intrinsic time-tracking systems in our bodies that anticipate environmental changes and adapt themselves to the appropriate time of day. Disruption of these rhythms can profoundly influence human health."

He added that up to 15 percent of people's genes are regulated by the day-night pattern of circadian rhythms.

In one study, Sassone-Corsi and colleagues found that the biological clock controls enzymes localized in the mitochondrion, a cellular structure devoted to energy metabolism. This government occurs through acetylation of proteins, a process that operates as a switch to turn genes on and off in cells based upon the cells' energy usage.

Some of the most important acetylation events in cells are dictated by an enzyme protein called SIRT1, which senses energy levels in the cell. Its activity is modulated by how many nutrients a cell is consuming. It also helps cells resist oxidative and radiation-induced stress. SIRT1 has been linked to the inflammatory response, diabetes and aging.

Sassone-Corsi first showed the circadian rhythm-metabolism link in 2008 and 2009, and in this study, he and his colleagues reveal the metabolic pathways through which SIRT1 works.

"When the balance between clock proteins is upset, normal cellular function can be disrupted," said Sassone-Corsi, who also directs the Center for Epigenetics & Metabolism at UC Irvine.

In exploring how to regulate SIRT1 activity, Sassone-Corsi teamed with scientists from two research-and-development groups at GlaxoSmithKline one in the United Kingdom and the other (called Sirtris) in the U.S. to test proprietary small-molecule compounds that stimulate SIRT1.

In mouse studies, they were able to modulate the scale of circadian-driven gene function with the SIRT1-activating compounds, effectively governing the circadian cycle in a host of genes involved with the metabolic rate in cells. This research proves that small molecules can be used as a pharmacological strategy to control circadian disturbances and is a step toward the development of drugs that could target many conditions, including metabolic disorders, diabetes, cancer and aging.

Postdoctoral researchers Selma Masri and Kristin Eckel-Mahan, graduate student Vishal Patel and Chancellor's Professor Pierre Baldi of UC Irvine, along with Shahaf Peleg, Ignasi Forne, Andreas Ladurner and Axel Imhof of Germany's University of Munich, as well as Sassone-Corsi, contributed to the study titled "The Circadian acetylome reveals regulation of mitochondrial metabolic pathways." The National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, INSERM and Sirtris provided support.

In addition to Sassone-Corsi, postdoctoral researcher Marina Bellet and laboratory assistant Marlene Cervantes of UC Irvine; Mohamed Boudjelal, Emma Watts, Danuta Mossakowska and Kenneth Edwards of GlaxoSmithKline; Giuseppe Astarita of Georgetown University; and Christine Loh, James Ellis and George Vlasuk of Sirtris contributed to the study titled "Pharmacological modulation of circadian rhythms by high-affinity SIRT1 activators." The National Institutes of Health and INSERM provided support.

Smart refrigerator runs apps for shopping lists, recipes

TORONTO (Reuters) - Refrigerators are getting smart. A new model released earlier this month runs apps to help users browse recipes, create shopping lists and manage the expiration dates of items like yogurt and milk.

The T9000 refrigerator by electronics company Samsung has a 10-inch Wi-Fi-enabled touchscreen and includes apps such as Epicurious for recipes and Evernote for note-taking.

"The fridge, because it's the hub of the family and the kitchen, is now another access point without having to drag around your tablet or have your phone with you in the vicinity of where you're cooking or entertaining," said Warner Doell, a vice president in the home appliance division at Samsung Canada.

The display enables users to keep up with the news, weather and even Twitter from the fridge door. It can also replace hand-written calendars with Google Calendar integration, and run slideshows of photos, according to Doell.

Shopping lists can be created on the fridge with the Evernote app, which will sync to smartphones and recipes can be found at Epicurious.

"You can say, 'I have these ingredients in the fridge -- what can I make?' and it will show you recipes that you can prepare," said Doell.

For people who have trouble keeping track of expiration dates of food items, there's an app for that, too.

But with smartphones and tablets are already ubiquitous in homes, does the smart refrigerator offer more than novelty?

Doell said it does.

"I get asked a lot why do you need a screen on a refrigerator? And it's a good question because we're inundated with technology today," said Doell.

The main reasons, he explained, are ease-of-use in managing settings, such as the refrigerators' temperature, and for convenience because consumers are demanding pervasive connectivity.

"This isn't only about today -- it's about what will the next five to ten years look like," he added.

The T9000 is geared towards the young-minded consumer who turns to technology for convenience, according to Doell.

Whether it's to control heating, air conditioning, lighting or window coverings, Doell said that apps for home automation will be increasingly penetrating the home.

"The technology is converging across all product categories. With appliances being the traditional staid industry, it has not been fast to adopt it," said Doell, adding that Samsung plans to take a leadership role in the area.

The refrigerator runs the Android operating system, but it is not possible to install other Android apps. It will be available worldwide in the spring for a suggested retail price of $3,999.

Japan's Abe in Thailand to talk economic ties, security

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Thailand on Thursday, part of a three-country Southeast Asian tour to consolidate business ties in one of the world's fastest-growing regions and counter growing Chinese assertiveness.

Tension remains high over China's claims on parts of the strategically vital and mineral-rich South China Sea that are also claimed by four Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, which Abe visited on Wednesday.

Abe and his Thai counterpart Yingluck Shinawatra gave no indication at a news conference after talks whether any progress had been made on this issue, making only general comments about security that did not mention the South China Sea.

The Japanese premier leaves for Jakarta on Friday, where he is expected to give a major policy speech.

Relations between Tokyo and Beijing have been frosty since a dispute over islands in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, flared up last year. Violent anti-Japanese protests have been staged in Chinese cities.

"China has successfully built up its own military power but for what? We celebrate China's economic growth but it's not a good idea to threaten others or urge others by coercion or intimidation," Yutaka Yokoi, a Japanese foreign ministry official, told Reuters in Bangkok.

Having taken on the role of mediator in the multi-layered South China Sea disputes, Thailand has said it would listen to what Japan has to say but would also take into consideration the views of other countries involved.

Analysts have said Abe will have to tread carefully in Southeast Asia to avoid provoking China by appearing to be trying to "contain" it. Moreover, his hosts will be keen to avoid upsetting China, now their major economic partner.

In Hanoi on Wednesday, Abe, on his first foreign trip since sweeping to power last month, agreed with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that disputes in the region should be solved through peaceful talks and international law.

FLOOD PREVENTION

Already one of the biggest foreign investors in Southeast Asia and the largest in Thailand, with its firms pouring 312 billion baht ($10.5 billion) into the country in 2012, Japan is keen to step up its economic presence in the region.

Abe's visit to Bangkok is the first by a Japanese prime minister in 11 years and comes as more Japanese firms look at setting up shop in the emerging economies of Southeast Asia because of the soured climate in China.

Thailand is not without problems: in addition to serious, disruptive bouts of political unrest in the past few years, it suffered its worst floods in half a century in 2011, with flood walls at seven huge industrial zones breached.

That disrupted the supply chains of big Japanese firms such as car maker Toyota Motor Corp.

"This is our opportunity to reassure Japan that we are serious about flood prevention and to reiterate that the 350 billion baht ($11.72 billion) we pledged for flood management will continue to focus on early warning systems," said Damrong Kraikuan, director-general of the Thai foreign ministry's East Asia Affairs department.

Japan is showing huge interest in Myanmar, which borders Thailand and is opening up after decades of military rule.

Thai officials said Abe's trip would be an opportunity to discuss Japanese involvement in the $50 billion Dawei economic zone in southern Myanmar, which is being developed by Thailand's Italian-Thai Development Pcl.

The project has struggled to secure the initial $8.5 billion needed to finance infrastructure and utilities.

"Thailand has invited Japan to join and invest in the Dawei project in Myanmar and we hope Japan will join our two countries in this endeavor," Yingluck told the news conference.

Abe described Thailand as "the gateway to Southeast Asia" but made no comment on Dawei. Neither he nor Yingluck took questions, simply reading prepared statements.

In September a source close to the Dawei project said a state-backed Japanese soft loan totaling $3.2 billion was being secured to help kick-start construction on basic port and road infrastructure.

Ministers from Thailand and Myanmar met in November and said funding for the project's first phase would be decided by February, with construction set to begin no later than April.

Yokoi from the Japanese foreign ministry suggested Tokyo was treading carefully on the project.

"We are willing to see the outcome from the talks between Thailand and Myanmar and would like to be kept informed but we still don't know what the size of investment or opportunities will be," he said. ($1 = 29.8600 Thai baht)

Board weighs firing SC teacher who stomped on flag

(AP) ? A South Carolina high school teacher who talked glowingly about the U.S. and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom might find out if he loses his job Monday.

Lexington-Richland District 5's school board was expected to consider the superintendent's recommendation to fire Scott Compton for his lesson at Chapin High School. The discussion is expected to happen behind closed doors.

Superintendent Stephen Hefner didn't find a problem with the ninth and 10th grade English teacher's lesson on how ideas should be greater than symbols, but instead was appalled with the bad judgment Compton used in defacing a U.S. flag to make his point, district spokesman Mark Bounds said.

"I was in the military 20 years. I will defend your right to burn an American flag in the public square to my death. But as a teacher, you cannot bring your personal biases into the classroom," Bounds said.

Neither Compton nor his attorney, Darryl Smalls, returned messages from The Associated Press. Last week, Smalls emailed a statement to WIS-TV, saying Compton was trying to show the idea of what America stands for is greater than the material objects like the flag that represent it.

"He meant no intentional disrespect to those men and women who served our country or to America itself," Smalls wrote. "Several members of his family served in the Armed Forces and they have his total support given all of the facts of the lesson."

Smalls told the television station that people were taking what happened to the flag out of context from the rest of the lesson.

The incident happened in early December and a parent called district officials after hearing what happened from his child. Hefner talked to students in the class as well as Compton before deciding to recommend the teacher's firing.

Teachers in South Carolina do not have tenure and cannot belong to unions. The law gives superintendents the ability to recommend firing teachers who show "an evident unfitness for teaching" as long as the teacher gets a hearing before the school board.

3 Dashboards to Build Social Media Engagement | The Daily Egg

  • The Daily Egg
  • 3 Dashboard Tools That Measure Social Media Engagement

Everyone wants to engage with users on social media, but with 350 million updates on Twitter alone how can anyone keep track of what?s happening?

Instead of being flooded by social media data, you need to surf the wave. That?s where engagement dashboards come in.

Here are three tools worth considering:

Commun.it

If you?re mainly active on Twitter, then try Commun.it.? Sign up for an account (the free account lets you manage a single Twitter profile), input your Twitter credentials and Commun.it works its magic.

The Dashboard

Once they have, every time you login you will see a three column dashboard.

The left column is your navigation, while the center column contains your feed.? The third and final column provides more detail based on what you have selected in your feed.

In the below example I have selected ?Influencers? from the navigation in Column 1 and I am viewing the details of an ()

Commun.it Dashboard

For each update you can see how Commun.it has tagged them (as an influencer, supporter or engaged user); which of your lists they belong to; their Twitter bio, followers and number of engagements.

You can also see mentions you haven?t replied to, with an inline tweet box and whether they are someone you should follow. Click on the ?consider to follow? button and the third column shows more detail about the user. You can follow them from the Commun.it site.

Navigating Commun.it

Beyond the dashboard, you can use the navigation in the left column to track relationships (influencers, supporters and engaged and high value); followers and unfollowers (with recommendations on who you should follow and unfollow); and groups (based on your Twitter lists).

You can find leads based on keywords you choose and refine these by location, language and sentiment.

Finally, you can search for particular Twitter users.

Activity and Engagement Reporting

To complete the package, Commun.it provides activity and engagement reports. The activity reports cover mentions sent and received, retweets sent and received, reach, the names of people mentioning you or mentioned by you, follower growth and your most retweeted status.

If you have a free account, the report covers the last 3 days only. The engagement report tracks some of the same items for particular areas and you can input a URL if you want to track that too.

Running this report brings up a table with a rating, follower count, engagement count and follower metrics for the users, including status updates.

Commun.it Report

Commun.it provides exactly what it says on its home page ? Easy Twitter Management.

But what if you also want to monitor sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and others?

Give a tool like Cloze or Engagio a try.

Let?s look at Cloze first.

Cloze

Cloze also provides a dashboard for you to track your interactions, but it?s not confined to Twitter.

You can add Facebook, LinkedIn and email ? in other words, most people?s most important networks. Cloze uses the data from these to create a profile for you that is surprisingly detailed.

Cloze

When you first go to Cloze, you get a homepage showing the number of missed messages you have and your Cloze score (which measures the quality of your relationships based on dormancy, frequency, responsiveness, privacy, freshness and balance) .

The home page also shows the number of messages and contacts being tracked and the number of strong relationships it has discovered.

Every contact also has a Cloze score based on their importance to and interaction with you. All you have to do is click on their name to get a detailed view of their interaction with you, their contact information, people related to them and recent messages.

In this example, my connection with this person is positively effected by how recently we have talked,

Cloze

?

The overall Cloze score is determined by a number of factors,

Catching Up

The next important page is the ?what you may have missed? page.

On the left this shows your contacts and their updates, with options to share them, mark the update as read, or mute them. You can filter the view to see just emails and direct messages; just profile updates; just new connections and just shares and comments. And you can also change what you see for targets, muted targets and everyone else.

?

Cloze automatically suggests targets based on your interaction, but you can also mute or pin different targets so you get the tailored view you want. You can even choose whether to show personal relationships, coworkers, other relationships or everyone and can track up to 100 key relationships.

Reply and share options are appropriate for the original source. For email, clicking the paper plane button allows you to send a quick email or to send one of the message templates (call me, I?m on the road, or I?ll reply soon).

Here?s an example of the options available for a Twitter status update I missed,

cloze2

Cloze provides a great way to communicate with the people you want to reach from a single place.

Engagio

The third dashboard is Engagio.

Founded by William Mougayar, the site started as a social conversations network ? a way to converse with others on social media without having to go to each site to find out what was happening.

That?s still at the heart of Engagio.

Sign up, add your accounts from 14 social networking sites and track your conversations either in a unified inbox or site by site. You can follow users and and see what they are talking about and even track the top people you interact with.

All of this happens in a Gmail-like inbox interface.

Transforming Relationships

At the start, the site aimed to let you transform your online interactions into relationships and recent changes have improved functionality and design.

Engagio tracks comments and discussions from 14 networks including

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Disqus
  • YouTube
  • StackExchange
  • StockTwits
  • Angel List
  • WordPress
  • Hacker News
  • Tumblr
  • Google Contacts
  • Foursquare

Engagio aims to end the fragmentation of the social web.

Engagio accounts

Discovering Engagement

At the heart of Engagio is the engagement discovery dashboard. On the left is a small navigation panel.

The middle shows discussions from people you are following, with a small icon indicating the network the update is on. Click on the update and a sub-menu appears to allow you to reply, share, follow, view, like or see the context. Some of these functions happen in-line, while others take you to the social media site to complete the action. And on the right of the dashboard, there are lists of sites and articles where your contacts are active.

All users also have an editable profile which lists their networks, Klout score, links (pulled mainly from Google+), bio and recent discussions. You can also get an at-a-glance view of how active users are on the social networks they use, the top sites they comment on and the people they interact with most.

Other Engagio Features

Here are some of the other major features of Engagio:

  1. When you follow a user on Engagio, even if it?s just on one network, you can see everywhere that user is participating (as long as they are signed up for Engagio).
  2. Engagio has a new search feature. Look for conversations on a topic of interest and drill down to the people, articles and sites talking about it ? this is an excellent research tool for writers and bloggers. You can even set up email alerts for your searches.
  3. Follow conversations and discussions from your Engagio dashboard ? you don?t ever need to lose a conversation again.

Which Tool is Best?

So which engagement dashboard is right for you?

As always, it depends on your needs.

If you?re only using Twitter, then all you need is Commun.it. If you just need the biggest social networks, then Cloze has a lot to offer and since it?s still new you can expect more features to be added.

For me, as an active user of multiple social networks, Engagio is the best choice.

What social media engagement dashboards are you experimenting with?
