Taylor named goalkeeping coach

Former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Maik Taylor has been appointed as the national side's new goalkeeping coach.

Taylor made 88 appearances for his country between 1999 and 2011 and replaces Tommy Wright, who has taken over at St Johnstone.

"I am delighted that Maik has agreed to take on the role of goalkeeping coach for the senior squad for the remainder of the World Cup qualifying campaign; he is a truly excellent professional and his experience will be invaluable in ensuring that our goalkeepers are well prepared and in the right frame of mind," manager Michael O'Neill said of the 41-year-old.

Taylor, who hopes to find a club for the forthcoming season, added: "I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to become involved with the squad.

"I always enjoyed playing for Northern Ireland and to now have the chance to come in and work with the goalkeepers for the remaining five games in the World Cup qualifying campaign is just fantastic."

Choice Review Claims Aussie Gamers Are 'Under Attack' With Price ...

A new review by consumer advocacy magazine Choice has compared the upcoming prices of 10 PS4 games and 13 Xbox One games, including Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Destiny, to find a 37% price discrepancy, on average, between here and the United States.

This comes one day after the federal governement?s IT Pricing Enquiry which claimed that game publishers hadn?t even tried to justify their higher prices for digitally downloaded games in this region.

In Choice?s submission to the enquiry, they quoted some findings of the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association:

The Australian video gaming industry generated $1.161 billion in the year to December 2012 with the top 10 titles accounting for 46 per cent of all sales

Choice?s Director of Campaigns and Communications, Matt Levey, goes on to say:

?Our analysis of the available game prices has shown that Australians will pay an average of 33% more for PS4 games and 29% more for Xbox One games. This is after excluding Australia?s 10% GST.?

According to Choice, over 200 products were surveyed and it was ?found that Australians were paying around 50% more for software, computers, iTunes and (of course) games.?

Again, things we already know. Will this latest wave attention lead to lower prices? The short answer is no ? lower sales will, though. Until people vote with their wallets, not much will change.

NASA Astronaut Says Spacesuit Water Leak Was 'Scary Situation' (Video)

The mysterious leak that cut a spacewalk short two weeks ago was apparently as frightening as it looked to those of us watching on NASA TV.

On July 16, NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and his European colleague Luca Parmitano hustled back inside the International Space Station after?water began filling Parmitano's helmet, making it hard for the Italian astronaut to hear and see. The malfunction forced the astronauts to abort a planned 6.5-hour excursion after just 92 minutes.

Both spacewalkers kept their cool, and everything turned out fine. But in a video describing the spacesuit water leak, Cassidy said the leak was a "scary situation" that could easily have been much worse.?

"The water ? if it had continued to leak much more, it would have been very serious," Cassidy said in the NASA video, which was released today (July 30).

In the video, Cassidy walked viewers through the basics of the leak, explaining that coolant water somehow got into Parmitano's ventilation system and was then blown into his spacesuit helmet.

Water droplets began building up behind a white piece of plastic at the back of Parmitano's helmet, Cassidy said. But they didn't stay trapped back there for long.

"Once the water got big enough that it went all the way around and started coming outside the edge of the white plastic piece, then it saturated his communication cap, and sort of capillary flow just brought the water all around his head," Cassidy explained, using Parmitano's helmet as a visual aid.

"He had water filled up in his ear cups, and it started to creep into his eyes and covered his nose," Cassidy added.

Exactly why this happened remains unclear; engineers are still working to determine the cause of the leak. NASA has also appointed an expert panel to investigate the issue and help make sure it doesn't happen again.

"The mishap investigation board will look more broadly at past operations and maintenance, quality assurance, aspects of flight control and other organizational factors," NASA officials wrote last week upon announcing the board, which will begin its work on Friday (Aug. 2). "The board's responsibility is to make observations and recommendations that can be applied to improve the safety of all of NASA's human spaceflight activities."

Cassidy and Parmitano ventured outside the International Space Station on July 16 to perform a variety of repair and maintenance operations, and to help prepare the orbiting lab for the arrival of a new Russian module later this year.

No spacewalks have been scheduled yet to finish the work the pair started that day. But there's no rush, Cassidy said.

"The most important thing is that the suits are determined to be safe, so that whenever the next folks get outside everything works well for them," Cassidy said.

Investigators probe Ind. bus crash that killed 3

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers from a youth camp in northern Michigan was just minutes from home when it came speeding off an Indianapolis interstate, struck a retaining wall and flipped on its side.

The accident Saturday afternoon killed three people and injured dozens of others. Now investigators are working to determined what caused the accident that happened after a 365-mile journey and just a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church where the bus was headed.

At the church, parents were waiting to pick up their children after a weeklong camp filled with prayer, zip lines and basketball when a bus carrying younger campers pulled in with passengers screaming.

Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, had sent four daughters to Camp CoBeAc, near Prudenville, Mich. Just one of his girls was on the bus that pulled into the parking lot, and he raced to the crash site in northern Indianapolis. What he found was a surreal scene, with clothing and other items strewn about and windows missing from the bus.

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," said Leffew, a deacon at the church.

Leffew's daughters escaped with just bumps and bruises, but others weren't as fortunate. Indianapolis fire officials said a husband and wife were dead at the scene, along with a third person whose age they didn't describe. Twenty-six other people were taken to area hospitals, including at least one teenager in critical condition.

Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs called the crash a "great tragedy."

"They were not that far from home. ... That only adds to the tragedy," Riggs said at the crash scene.

He said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said investigators had not determined whether the church-owned bus had mechanical issues.

Witnesses to the crash described a horrifying scene.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m. ? about the time youth pastor Chad Phelps had tweeted the group expected to arrive at the church.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

He said people approached and tried to help.

"People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Sasha Sample, 28, told The Indianapolis Star some victims were lying in the road, while others were able to limp to the side.

"Everybody had boils and scrapes on them," she said. "People were trying to climb from under the bus."

Sample, a nurse, said she borrowed a belt to make a tourniquet for the bus driver's arm but wasn't able to help the man next to him, who was already dead.

"I couldn't do anything for him," Sample said. "So you triage. You help those you can."

Fire officials said 37 people were on the bus and that the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients had head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Families of the bus passengers gathered at the church Saturday evening to comfort each other and pray.

Mayor Greg Ballard described many as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow but said there will be difficult days ahead.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Leffew agreed, saying his daughters and other teens on the bus "saw some difficult things" that they'd never had to experience before.

"Their biggest pain is what they saw," he said.

Bob Taylor, who retired as the church's pastor four years ago, said members of the congregation would come together Sunday and take comfort in their faith.

"Our church family will meet tomorrow and pray together and sing songs together and just trust the lord to give his grace," he said.

Florida Shooting: Clashing Accounts Of Gunman

The gunman who killed six people in a shooting spree in Florida has been described as a "good son" but also as a difficult man prone to getting into fights.

Pedro Vargas, 42, took his mother to doctor appointments but also yelled at her, neighbours said.

Vargas set ablaze the apartment he lived in with his mother and killed six people before police fatally shot him.

During the confrontation, he moved from floor to floor inside an apartment complex in Hialeah and barricaded himself with hostages inside their home.

After an eight-hour standoff and failed attempts to persuade him to surrender, a Swat team entered and killed him.

"He was a good son," said Ester Lazcano, who lived on the same floor as Vargas and his mother.

"He'd take her in the morning to run errands" and to doctor appointments.

Hialeah is a working class suburb a few miles northwest of downtown Miami

Miriam Valdes, who was in a friend's apartment two doors down, said she heard officers trying to convince Vargas to surrender.

He refused to cooperate, she said.

Ms Valdes, 70, said Vargas was known as a difficult person who sometimes got into fights and yelled at his mother.

"He was a very abusive person," she told the AP news agency.

"He didn't have any friends there."

Detectives were investigating whether Vargas had any ongoing disputes with the building manager, as some residents believed.

"Nobody seems to know why he acted the way he acted," said Lieutenant Carl Zogby, a spokesman with the Hialeah Police Department.

He described Vargas, who had no criminal record, as a "quiet man" with an "unremarkable background".?

Lieutenant Zogby said Vargas still had several rounds of ammunition when he was killed.

"He was ready to fight," he said.

The gunman's mother was not home at the time of the shootings, and the hostages were not hurt.

Baseball Hall doors open for White, Ruppert, O'Day

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) ? The rain, the gloom, the small gathering of fans didn't matter.

For the families of baseball pioneers Jacob Ruppert Jr., Hank O'Day and James "Deacon" White this was what they had long been waiting for.

All three have been dead for more than seven decades. Now their legacies were secure with their induction Sunday into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

"This is a day we will all remember for the rest of our lives," said Jerry Watkins, great grandson of White and one of nearly 50 family members in attendance. "In my mind, the only way it could have been better is if my dad were here to see it. My dad loved his grandfather, he loved baseball, and he loved the Chicago Cubs. It was his lifelong dream to see his grandfather enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and it was his lifelong dream to see the Cubs play in the World Series. Dad, today you got one of them."

White, a barehanded catcher who grew up in Caton, N.Y., near Corning, was one of major league baseball's earliest stars. In fact, he was the first batter in the first professional game on May 4, 1871, and laced a double. An outstanding hitter, White was regarded as the best catcher in baseball before switching to third base later in his nearly 20-year career.

A deeply religious man, White was nicknamed "Deacon" and dubbed "the most admirable superstar of the 1870s" by Bill James in his "Historical Baseball Extract." White played for six teams and had a .312 career average. He finished with 2,067 hits, 270 doubles, 98 triples, 24 home runs and 988 RBIs before retiring in 1890.

"In my heart, I never believed this day would come," Watkins said. "If my grandfather were alive today, he would say thank you to the Hall of Fame for this great honor, and he would say thank you to each of you for being here. So, on his behalf I say thank you."

Ruppert was born in Manhattan in 1867 and instead of college went to work for his father in the family brewing business. He also fashioned a military career, rising to the rank of colonel in the National Guard, and served four terms in Congress from 1899-1907 before becoming president of the Jacob Ruppert Brewing Co. upon the death of his father in 1915.

Interested in baseball since he was a kid, Ruppert purchased the Yankees before the 1915 season for $480,000, then proceeded to transform what had been a perennial also-ran in the American League into a powerhouse. He hired Miller Huggins as manager, Ed Barrow as his general manager, snared Babe Ruth in a 1919 deal with the Boston Red Sox that changed the dynamics of the sport and built Yankee Stadium in 1923.

When Ruppert died in 1939, his teams had won 10 AL pennants and seven World Series in 18 seasons.

"For my family, it's a huge honor. I'm sure Uncle Jacob would be proud," said Anne Vernon, a great grandniece of Ruppert. "It's also very meaningful for my children. It has meant so much."

O'Day was born on the rural west side of Chicago in 1859 and played ball as a kid with his older brothers. He apprenticed as a steamfitter while pitching for several local teams. He turned pro in 1884, but his arm suffered mightily in seven years of action and he retired not long after leading the New York Giants to the National League pennant in 1889 and pitching a complete game to clinch the 19th century precursor to the modern World Series.

During his playing days, O'Day umpired occasionally and was so proficient he was hired in 1895. After working a season in the minor leagues, he joined the NL in 1897 and went on to umpire more than 4,000 games. His greatest contribution to baseball was persuading those associated with the game to treat the men in blue with dignity.

"He was almost a mythic figure in our family," 70-year-old Dennis McNamara, a grandnephew of O'Day, said as he choked back tears. "I wonder, what does this mean? It means everyone is recognized at some point. You may not know it, but recognition does come."

O'Day's most memorable call happened in September 1908 when he called Fred Merkle of the New York Giants out for not touching second base on what would have been a game-winning hit against the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the ninth.

Cubs second baseman Johnny Evers noticed it and appealed to O'Day, the only man in the history of the NL to play, manage, and umpire in the postseason. O'Day, who went on to manage the Cubs, called Merkle out on a force play, the game ended in a tie and the teams finished the season tied for first place. The Cubs won the makeup game and the pennant, their last, and O'Day never wavered in his ruling.

"The lesson of Hank O'Day is do your best with honesty and integrity," McNamara said.

When Lou Gehrig of the Yankees and Rogers Hornsby of St. Louis were inducted into the Hall of Fame, they never experienced a formal ceremony in Cooperstown. That changed Sunday, when the two, along with 10 other players elected between 1939 and 1945 were feted ? Roger Bresnahan, Dan Brouthers, Fred Clarke, Jimmy Collins, Ed Delahanty, Hugh Duffy, Hughie Jennings, Mike "King" Kelly, Jim O'Rourke and Wilbert Robinson.

Returning Hall of Famers took turns reading the text of those players' plaques in their honor. Former Baltimore Orioles star Cal Ripken Jr., who eclipsed Gehrig's longstanding record for consecutive games, was chosen to read the inscription on the Iron Horse's plaque, while former Cincinnati second baseman Joe Morgan read Hornsby's.

Ruppert, O'Day and White ? the Class of 2013 ? made the festivities something out of the ordinary. For only the second time in 42 years, baseball writers failed to elect anyone to the Hall of Fame, sending a firm signal that stars of the Steroids Era ? including Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens, who didn't even come close in their first year of eligibility ? will be judged in a different light.

Mark McGwire, 10th on the career home run list with 583, has watched his vote totals decrease. He received 24 percent in 2010 ? a vote before he acknowledged using steroids and human growth hormone ? and received 17 percent this year on his seventh try.

Six years ago, a record crowd of over 70,000 descended on this one-stoplight village for the induction ceremony honoring Ripken and Tony Gwynn. Sunday's inclement weather ? the start of the ceremony was delayed by rain ? figured to affect the turnout, and it was sparse? only 32 Hall of Famers returned.

Still, Tisch Farley and husband John drove up from the Philadelphia area and were in the front row of spectators behind a snow fence to the right of the stage.

"We can say we've been at the most-crowded induction and the least crowded," Tisch Farley said with a pained smile.

It was John's 20th straight year and the 12th for Keith Pittman of Terre Haute, Ind., but they played second fiddle to their annual Hall of Fame buddy, Jim Mishk.

"I come to this every year," said the 58-year-old Mishk, who is from Fishkill, just north of New York City, and has a streak of 32 straight induction ceremonies. "This is part of my normal vacation. I love baseball."

Mishk was asked about the small turnout.

"The Bonds, the Sosas, the McGwires, they're the reason this crowd is like this," Mishk said. "The people in town are the ones suffering, not the ballplayers. This is a once-a-year thing (financially) for the town, and their selfishness ruined this. This is sad."

PREP FOOTBALL: Upland gets transfer boost going into 2013 season

The Upland High School football program has attracted its share of transfers over the years, but it may reach new heights this season.

If all players who have transferred from other schools since last season are approved by the CIF-SS, the Highlanders will feature at least eight new faces in the fall.

That figure doesn't include incoming freshman receiver Nathan Tilford, who received scholarship offers from USC and Arizona State while he was still in eighth grade.

"We work really hard at what we do and if people move in for whatever reason and we're the benefactor, then I'm happy for that," said Upland head coach Tim Salter, who is entering his 19th year. "We're not out there recruiting kids, but I think we have one of the best programs around."

Most, if not all, of the transfers figure to be impact players this season for an Upland team that has reached the CIF-SS Inland Division semifinals two seasons running.

Tyler Hilinski, a 6-foot-4 junior who spent his first two seasons at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, is expected to be the starting quarterback for the two-time defending Baseline League champions. Though he is unproven after two years behind older brother Kelly Hilinski on the depth chart, Salter proclaimed the younger Hilinski a Division-I prospect.

The quarterback, whose

family has returned to a previous residence in Claremont, is one of four transfers to Upland already approved by CIF-SS along with Elijah Jones from Damien, Tatum Slack from Rancho Cucamonga and Eric Turner from Victor Valley. All four attended Upland the second semester of last school year.

Of the four other transfers hoping to be approved, one has already been denied.

A CIF-SS ruling came down last week that the transfer of running back Jake Payton, whose 1,658 yards and 22 touchdowns at San Dimas last season earned him the Valle Vista League MVP, was athletically motivated.

Unless Payton wins his appeal, he will be ineligible for his senior season.

"I can't really comment on Jake's case but we just hope the appeals process goes OK," Salter said. "We anticipate if he has the opportunity to play, he could play a key role in what we do offensively."

Rising senior Marquis Wimberly is one of three coming to Upland who played at Victor Valley last season. The 6-foot, 180-pound rising senior is joined by offensive lineman Gary Baker and Turner, who was Victor Valley's starting quarterback last season.

Turner, a rising junior who passed for 1,157 yards last season, will play receiver for Upland. Baker's family is still in the process of moving to Upland and will submit paperwork for transfer approval once their address is confirmed. Wimberly's paperwork has already been submitted for approval.

A likely starter at receiver for the Highlanders, Wimberly spent the first part of last season at Diamond Ranch before transferring in time to play the final three games of the 2012 season with Victor Valley.

Slack, who played quarterback for the Rancho Cucamonga junior varsity last year before transferring to Upland in the midst of football season, will primarily play defensive back for the Highlanders.

Joining him in the secondary will be Jones, who had 15 tackles and one interception as a sophomore last season at Damien. Jones is also a capable running back, but Upland returns three others aside from Payton who will be competing for carries.

"With the new guys coming in, it's tough on the kids that have been here," Salter said. "But the kids here know what they're getting into. "This program has always been based on internal competition and we've never represented it any other way."

Movie Review: How Issaq murdered 'Romeo and Juliet' - Firstpost

So here?s what we know about the Benares in which director Manish Tewari sets Issaq. There are more staircases in the city than there are mosquitoes in Kolkata. Its men spit compulsively and everywhere. Wiry old sadhus have elaborate chemistry labs with test tubes, beakers and flasks in their backyards. These sadhus can outdo Pooja Bedi with their sex-life advice, and they levitate with the same ease with which an average Indian man burps or scratches his crotch. Benares is also under grave threat from the Maoists who, being as imaginative as the film?s director, aren?t so pedestrian as to behave like real-life Maoists; they smuggle sand.

Background set, let?s move on to the story of the film. No spoilers here, just what the director has said already said ? Issaq is an adaptation of Shakespeare?s much-adapted Romeo and Juliet. The counterparts of Capulet and Montagues are Kashyap and Mishra. (If you missed this stunning usage of alliteration here, you should probably never watch a Bollywood film ever again.)

Courtesy: Facebook

Courtesy: Facebook

The Kashyaps have a girl, Bachchi. The Mishras? boy is called Rahul. Rahul, played by Prateik, is your average small-town lover boy who struggles to speak in English and hits on anything that has breasts. The only redeeming quality about our soon-to-be Romeo are those bronzed, toned biceps, tailor-made for banian commercials. Bachchi, played by newcomer Amyra Dastur, is a pretty girl who looks inexplicably pleased throughout the film.

The duo meet at Benares? counterpart of a masque ball: Holi party. At this party, Rahul drinks bhang and stares into the camera creepily. Bachchi, on the other hand, reveals her inner rebel by wearing a pair of horns alongside her salwar kameez and stoically waist-jerks to the music of dhol. I hope feminist hearts are bursting with joy at the mere thought of this uplifting demonstration of girl power. Drunk boy sneaks up to girl in prayer room and kisses her. This, ladies and gentlemen, is romantic. Because there?s nothing even mildly disturbing about an inebriated man forcibly kissing an unknown girl after barging into her house, right? All?s fair in love and war in Benares. Haven?t you seen Raanjhanaa?

Then we meet the villains: the aforementioned sand-smuggling Maoists led by one Tamil man called ?Madrasi? (a red-eyed, perennially-grumbling evil mama played by Ravi Kissen), a stepmom (Rajyashree Badola) and a fair, chubby-cheeked policeman call Prithvi. The Kashyaps and the Mishras are in the business of capturing Benares?s ghats. They are also in the extremely profitable business of sand smuggling. How does sand smuggling work? SUV-filled goons drive on to endless stretches of sand and camp there, taking truck-full of sand and silt away. Given how prolific these men are shown to be in Issaq, you?d imagine Benares to be a desert of Thar?s proportions. Anyway, so this squabbling over who gets to smuggle more mud/sand make the families sworn enemies.

Meanwhile, Bacchi and Rahul fall in love. Their moment under Cupid?s sun is not announced by a random song. It comes with the girl?s earth shattering declaration to her lover that she is a virgin. Boy responds with a disturbing expression on his face you usually associate with 12-year-olds watching porn for the first time. Girl finds nothing creepy about it and then they end up singing a song together.

The families are outraged, the sand smuggling Maoist is out for a kill and the policeman wants the girl. The least absurd thing that happens in the rest of the film is when a young Maoist shoots a bunch of policemen, chanting he wants Katrina Kaif.

We?re not yet sure what Prateik?s talents are as an actor except denouncing surnames. And the most memorable role he has played till date was only second in importance to Genelia D?Souza?s hair clips in Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa. In Issaq, Prateik mistakes himself to be in a Nike commercial. He runs in more languid slo-mo than Kajol in ?Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam? and he jumps over more rooftops than Akshay Kumar has in for Thumbs Up. And then there?s his dialogue delivery, which is a scary reminder of how Katrina Kaif mangled lines in Boom. Not much is required of our Juliet. Dastur looks facewash-ad fresh and pretty. She wears a whole bunch of nice kurtis throughout the film. Brownie points to her for that.

One wonders, however, what is a greater tragedy ? Romeo and Juliet or what Issaq made of that classic love story.

China orders production cuts in some industries

BEIJING (AP) ? China?s government has ordered companies to close factories in 19 industries where overproduction has led to price-cutting wars, affirming its determination to push ahead with a painful economic restructuring despite slowing growth.

The industry ministry issued orders late Thursday to more than 1,400 companies to cut excess capacity that has led to financial trouble for manufacturers. It also applies to producers of copper and glass and requires some companies to close outright.

Communist leaders are trying to reduce reliance on investment and trade. But a slowdown that pushed China?s economic growth to a two-decade low of 7.5 percent in the latest quarter prompted suggestions they might have to reverse course and stimulate the economy with more investment to reduce the threat of job losses and unrest.

??This detailed list shows the government is serious in its efforts to restructure the economy and is prepared to tolerate the necessary pain,?? said Nomura economist Zhiwei Zhang in a report. ??This reinforces our view that aggressive policy stimulus is unlikely in 2012 and that growth should trend down.??

An investment boom and government subsidies to industries such as solar panel manufacturing prompted producers to expand rapidly until supply exceeded demand. Companies have been forced to slash prices, often to below production cost.

The government?s overall measure of prices charged by producers has fallen for the past 16 months, threatening a growing number with financial ruin. A major solar panel maker, Suntech, was forced into bankruptcy this year.

Forecasters have repeatedly trimmed their growth outlook for China amid a drumbeat of data showing weakening growth in retail sales, factory output and other economic segments.

This month, the International Monetary Fund last week cut its 2013 forecast to 7.8 percent from an 8.1 percent outlook announced just three months earlier. The Fund?s chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, said China was the country at the greatest risk of a ??large decrease in growth.??

Private sector forecasters say growth could dip below 7 percent in coming quarters.

The country?s top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, was quoted Tuesday by Chinese newspapers affirming the Communist Party?s growth target of 7.5 percent this year. He said the ??bottom line?? for growth was 7 percent, prompting hopes among investors for at least a limited stimulus.

Also Tuesday, the Cabinet announced a tax cut for small businesses, indicating Beijing is trying to target specific parts of the economy without a costly, across-the-board stimulus.

Thursday?s order by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said it aims to eliminate ??backward production capacity,?? indicating it also is meant to improve efficiency in energy and resource use.

Other industries targeted include coke, calcium carbide, aluminum, smelting of lead and zinc, paper, alcohol, monosodium glutamate, citric acid, leather, printing and dyeing, chemical fiber and batteries.

The production glut is in part a lingering cost of the multibillion-dollar stimulus that helped China rebound quickly from the 2008 global crisis.

Beijing pumped money into the economy with a wave of spending, much of it financed by state banks, on building new subways, bridges and other public works. Higher revenues for state-owned construction companies and suppliers of steel and other building materials propped up inefficient producers and encouraged some to expand.

In the cement industry, Thursday?s order calls on companies to shut down facilities with annual production capacity of more than 92 million tons. Steel producers were ordered to eliminate 7 million tons of production capacity.

Novel mechanism in spinal cord injury discovered: 'See-saw' molecule may offer clues to potential therapies in the long-term

[unable to retrieve full-text content]More than 11,000 Americans suffer spinal cord injuries each year, and since over a quarter of those injuries are due to falls, the number is likely to rise as the population ages. The reason so many of those injuries are permanently disabling is that the human body lacks the capacity to regenerate nerve fibers. The best our bodies can do is route the surviving tissue around the injury site.

Packed boat capsizes near remote Australian island

SYDNEY (AP) ? A boat carrying around 150 asylum seekers capsized in the Indian Ocean, spilling men, women and infants into rough waters and killing four people, Australian officials said Wednesday.

The boat rolled over Tuesday in choppy seas 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of Christmas Island, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told reporters. The Australian island is 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Jakarta, Indonesia.

Two navy ships had been sent to assist the vessel earlier in the day, but rescue crews were unable to board as waves reached as high as 4 meters (13 feet), said David Johnston, Commander of Australia's Border Protection Command.

The navy ships instead began escorting the boat to Christmas Island, where Australia operates a detention camp for asylum seekers. Several hours into the journey, the boat started leaning and some passengers began jumping into the water. Shortly after, the boat rolled and capsized, Clare said. Officials don't know what caused the boat to flip.

Rescuers dropped life rafts into the water and plucked 144 people to safety. The bodies of two women and two men were recovered before the search was called off Tuesday night.

The survivors, from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq, were taken to Christmas Island, along with three Indonesian crew members. There were several infants and children on board, Johnston said.

"It is a dreadful feeling in the stomach when we hear that a vessel has capsized, or that it is in some difficulty," Johnston said. "Recovering 144 people in the conditions they had yesterday was extraordinary work."

Customs officials estimated the boat had 150 passengers and said they are interviewing survivors to determine the exact occupancy of the boat but aren't searching for more people.

Christmas Island is a popular destination for asylum seekers who crowd into rickety boats at Indonesian ports and pay people smugglers to ferry them to Australian shores. Hundreds have died while attempting the journey in recent years.

Last week, another boat carrying asylum seekers sank off Christmas Island. Officials recovered the body of a baby boy and were unable to find 8 passengers who vanished in the water.

Japan to nationalize 400 remote islands to bolster territorial claims in China spat

China National News (ANI) Tuesday 16th July, 2013

Japan could nationalize unclaimed islands in its waters to bolster its territorial claims, a government source has said.

The sources said that the government plans to establish a new council aimed at strengthening the administration of Japan's 400 or so remote islands.

The council will also ensure it has control over natural resources in the surrounding waters.

According to Japan Times, the government will collect environmental and other data on the islands and name those yet unnamed.

The source said that the council will be established after the House of Councilors election on July 21. (ANI)

a new opinion in Computer about Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi 16 GB

The iPad 2, an amazing continuation from the fantastic iPad 1, but a step behind the iPad 3. But for the average person they all do basically the same thing, it's just performance may differ from one model to the next.

Anyway for anyone that doesn't know what an iPad is, it's a tablet computer. You can store/listen to music and watch videos, browse the Internet and download and use a unreal amount of applications for all uses that can be downloaded from the App Store.

As with a lot of Apple products they can seem a little pricey compared to other similar products on the market. But let me assure you they're not very similar, what may appear to look like an iPad type tablet, inside is struggling to even match half of the iPad specifications. The iPad 2 is a reliable and durable machine, that couldn't be anymore easier to use due to its large, clear touch screen. It has a powerful processor that means apps run smoothly and hardly ever crash, the iPad runs at speed!

I mostly use my iPad for browsing the Internet, I do a lot of online shopping on it, the large screen allows for easy viewing. Rather importantly as well is the fact the browsing software is completely safe from Internet viruses and malware, making it trouble free.

The battery life is surprisingly long, a full battery lasts for approximately 8-9 hours. Allowing you to watch and play for a substantial amount of time! One issue I have noticed is that it does seem to take longer to charge than other apple products for example my iPhone 5, but that could just be me.

Videos can be watched in basically HD quality and take barely any time to load. Sound playback is superb and the volume does reach a high level.

Overall I would recommend everyone to get an iPad if they can, it's makes jobs so much easier and quicker and will save you time in numerous ways!

iWatch: Apple busca ingenieros. Posible lanzamiento finales 2014

Qantas set to roll out new Qantas Cash travel money cards - Flights ...

Qantas is gearing up for the launch of its new?Qantas Cash travel money card, with the first batch of the pre-paid cards due to reach frequent flyers in September.

The Qantas Cash travel money card doubles as a standard Qantas Frequent Flyer card, which in turn includes access to the airline's Smarter Faster Checkin system through which travellers can check in for domestic and selected international flights with a tap of the smartchipped card.

"We have over 9 million members in Qantas Frequent Flyer and our research says that over?over 70% of members carry their Qantas card wherever they go"?says?Lesley Grant,?CEO of Qantas Loyalty.

Qantas says that all frequent flyers will eventually receive the new cards, although?you'll need to opt in to activate the card's cash functionality.

Nine 'virtual wallets'

Each card will contain 'virtual wallets' for up to?eight foreign currencies in addition to the Aussie dollar. Qantas has yet to detail which overseas currencies will be on the roster but it's a safe bet to expect?US dollars, UK pounds, Euros plus New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong dollars.

A?new Qantas Cash website and smartphone app will make it easy to load currencies before and indeed during your travels, including moving currencies between virtual wallets ? if for example you've got??1,000 sitting on the card but find yourself on a quick trip to Germany and short of Euros.

The Qantas Cash card will also permit cash withdrawals from ATMs internationally and within Australia, and support tap-and-go PayPass technology.

But how many points will you earn?

Travellers will earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on domestic and international transactions, although?Qantas has yet to reveal how many points that will be, along with other costs such as ATM fees.

By way of comparison, the competing Virgin Australia Global Wallet?travel money card will earn?1 Velocity Frequent Flyer point for every $2 spent in Australia and 1 point per A$1 spent overseas, while ATM withdrawals range from A$2.50 to A$3.30 depending on the country you're in.

Qantas has partnered with MasterCard for Qantas Cash, while Virgin Australia's Global Wallet is allied to?Visa.

Australian Business Traveller will bring you a detailed comparison of the Qantas and Virgin Australia travel money cards, along with their competitors, once full details on both cards are known.

Auto News Roundup: Ford Motor Company (F)?s Boost in Europe, Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) Hits a Higher Gear, and General Motors Company (GM)?s Latest Union Brawl

Ford (F) General Motors Company (GM)This week's big news in the auto business included happy milestones for?Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) and?Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) shareholders, signs that things are looking up for some (but not all) automakers in long-troubled Europe, and a war of words -- and more -- between?General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) and a powerful overseas union.

Here's what you need to know about the latest developments around the world.

Big gains for Ford in struggling Europe We'll start with Europe, where new-car sales have fallen to a 20-year low and automakers have piled up huge losses. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is Europe's second-biggest auto brand after Volkswagen, and it has certainly had its share of red ink -- the Blue Oval's European branch lost more than $1.7 billion last year, and executives have predicted that losses could hit $2 billion in 2013.

The just-refreshed Ford Fiesta is one of Europe's best-selling vehicles. Photo credit: Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F).

Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) launched a major turnaround effort last fall, hoping to break even in 2015 ? but already, there are some signs that things are looking up. Ford said on Friday that its sales in the 19 countries it counts as "Europe" were actually up 6.4% last month -- even as the overall industry was down 6.5%. Ford said its latest new models were key contributors to the gains.

That drove Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)'s Europe market share to 8.2%, up a full percentage point from June of last year. Better yet for Ford, this wasn't just a quick boost from rental-fleet business. Ford's rental-fleet sales are down in Europe, the result of a conscious decision to focus on more profitable retail and commercial-vehicle sales.

Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) lost $462 million in Europe in the first quarter. Its second-quarter earnings report is due later this month. If it shows that Ford's losses in Europe have narrowed, that will be a good sign that the plan really is working -- and it could give Ford's stock price a nice boost.

New highs for Tesla Motors -- and Ford stock, too Bloomberg noted earlier this week that America's oldest and youngest automakers -- that would be Ford and Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) -- both saw their shares hit "100-week highs" on Tuesday.

For Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), of course, that was its all-time high. The upstart Silicon Valley automaker saw its shares boosted by the news that its stock will join the benchmark Nasdaq 100 Index, just three years after the company's initial offering.

Production of Tesla's hot Model S sedan is increasing, the company said this week. Photo credit: Tesla Motors.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk also said this week that the company has increased its production of the electric Model S sedan, surpassing its longtime goal of making 400 cars a week. Musk said the company is now aiming at a production rate of 800 vehicles a week by the end of next year. Tesla expects to sell about 21,000 cars this year.

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) stock is gaining thanks to a surging new-vehicle market in the U.S., which has given sales of its F-Series pickups a big boost in recent months. The F-Series is a key driver of Ford's profits, and the lineup's 22% sales increase in the first half of 2013 is expected to drive strong earnings in Ford's home market of North America.

Twitter gives France data in anti-Semitic posts

(AP) ? Twitter has given French authorities information that can help identify the authors of a series of racist and anti-Semitic tweets that carried French hashtags, and the social media site also has agreed to work with a Jewish student group that sued for the data on other ways to fight hate speech.

The president of the Union of Jewish Students of France said Saturday that his organization, known as UEJF, was withdrawing a $50 million lawsuit against San Francisco-based Twitter Inc., which was originally filed as a means to pressure the company to comply and "end Twitter's indifference."

"We got Twitter to respect the laws of our country," Jonathan Hayoun said in a telephone interview. Propagating racial and anti-Semitic hatred is against French law.

Twitter's policies require international users to comply with local laws regarding online conduct and acceptable content, and the social network's free-wheeling style has in the past been stymied by European legislation. For instance, Germany restricts the use of Nazi-related symbols and slogans, such as the swastika or the phrase "Heil Hitler." Twitter blocked a neo-Nazi account in Germany last October.

In January, a Paris court ordered Twitter to turn over data that could help identify account holders who last fall posted the offending tweets, which included slurs and photos evoking the Holocaust. The anti-Semitic tweets, which started Oct. 10, were followed by racist posts against Muslims. Twitter then agreed to pull the tweets.

A joint statement Friday from Twitter and the UEJF said the social media site has turned over to the Paris prosecutor's press and public liberties section "data that may enable the identification of certain users that the vice-prosecutor believes have violated French law."

The statement also said the two sides agreed to "actively continue contributing together to the fight against racism and anti-Semitism, in keeping with their respective domestic laws and regulations." Those efforts will include "taking measures to improve the accessibility of the reporting procedure of illegal Tweets."

The Paris court had also ordered Twitter to make it easier for users of its French website to report any "illegal content." However, Twitter was not obligated to comply since the U.S. company has no offices in France.

The Jewish student group's president said it had reached a broader deal with Twitter that goes beyond the statement, but he refused to provide details, saying it was confidential.

French law forbids all discrimination based on ethnicity, nationality, race or religion and has done so since 1881. There has been a raft of legislation since then refining the broad ban, including a ban on inciting racial hatred. A 2004 act addresses the Internet, but is mainly directed at Internet service providers and hosts, saying they must contribute to the prevention of revisionist and racist data.

Hayoun, the Jewish group leader, said it was important that Twitter "stop directing its eyes only to American laws and the First Amendment of the American Constitution. In France, you can't say just whatever you want on the Internet."

He said he hopes the people who posted the offensive tweets would be punished because "Twitter is a public space, and just like it is forbidden to say 'dirty Jew' in the streets it is forbidden to type it out on your keyboard and send it on Twitter."

University of Michigan activates antimatter 'gun,' cartoon supervillians twirl moustaches anew

Scientists create tabletop antimatter 'gun,' cartoon supervillians twirl mustaches anew
At the University of Michigan, an international team of physicists has begun experimenting with its tabletop-sized super laser, modding it into an antimatter "gun." It's not quite a black hole-firing pistol, but we're slightly terrified nonetheless. Up until now, machines capable of creating positrons -- coupled with electrons, they comprise the energy similar to what's emitted by black holes and pulsars -- have needed to be as large as they are expensive. Creating these antimatter beams on a small scale will hopefully give astrophysicists greater insight into the "enigmatic features" of gamma ray bursts that are "virtually impossible to address by relying on direct observations," according to a paper published at arXiv. While the blasts only last fractions of a second each, the researchers report each firing produces a particle-density output level comparable to the accelerator at CERN. Just like that, the Longhorns/Wolverines super-laser arms-race begins again.

Canada Day beer drinking: Molson and Moosehead

It might surprise you to know, given the number of beer ads that you see in print and on TV, that Canada is not exactly a world leader in beer consumption.

In 2010, we ranked in the low twenties just behind Spain. Despite that, there?s always a certain amount of effort made by Canadian breweries to gear up for the Canada Day long weekend. It?s unlikely that this has to do with the idea of drinking beer as a defining measure of patriotism or national character. It probably has more to do with the fact that you?ve got a day off and it?s humid enough outside that you feel like you?re breathing soup.

Nevertheless, brewers are appealing to your sense of nationalism and nostalgia for this year?s go-round.

Moosehead, for instance, has a special edition can festooned with caricatures of the kind of summery people who might be drinking their beer across the nation. Geographical areas are represented by different iconic images. The north has a Mountie and an Inukshuk. Halifax is represented by the lighthouse at Peggy?s Cove. Saskatoon has a barn, which seems reductive if accurate. It?s a nice touch, but it remains to see if it will sell a lot of beer.

The folks at Molson have gone heavily in the direction of nostalgia with a revamped version of their I Am Canadian campaign. The ranting Canuck in front of an appreciative audience has been replaced by a specially designed fridge in the middle of various European cities. The key here is that the fridge can only be opened by scanning a Canadian passport.

It?s a vaguely jingoistic concept which seems to celebrate the fact that we have all stood in lengthy lineups to talk to a bureaucrat about leaving the country. I don?t know exactly what the message is here, but I?m entertained by the idea that at some point, an unsuspecting Canadian citizen was accosted in the middle of a European vacation by someone saying ?Are you Canadian? Give us your passport. We want to get free beer.?

I?d like to think that if there?s one thing Canada is good at, it?s taking care of our own. For that reason, I?d suggest that your beer purchase this Canada Day shouldn?t be dictated by marketing, but rather by circumstance.

If you?ve been following the news, you know that Calgary has recently suffered from catastrophic flooding. Breweries like Big Rock, Village and Wild Rose have been volunteering their time and the efforts of their employees to help out. They?re working together to organize a relief fundraising effort in the immediate future. I would say that this is the kind of behaviour that we, as Canadians, should be rewarding. If they?re available in your market, why don?t you do that by making their beers your choice for this weekend?

Jordan St.John writes about beer at Saintjohnswort.ca. He is so Canadian he once hit a moose with a canoe.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? State troopers lined the halls of the Texas Capitol, and 5,000 protesters rallied outside against proposed abortion legislation, as lawmakers convened Monday for a second special session that Republican leaders pledged wouldn't descend into chaos like the first.

The Texas House and Senate each met for less than an hour before recessing for the week. That was just long enough to schedule new committee hearings for the proposed restrictions that would make Texas one of the toughest places in the nation for women to get abortions.

Less than one week earlier, Democrats scored a rare victory in the GOP-dominated Legislature by running out the clock on the first special session.

Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth was on her feet for more than 12 hours ? speaking most of that time ? during the Democratic filibuster. When Republicans used parliamentary technicalities to silence her, hundreds of protesters in the public gallery and surrounding Capitol corridors cheered so loudly that work on the bill couldn't be completed before the midnight deadline.

"You're going to see a completely different debate this time around," said Rep. Steve Toth, a Republican from The Woodlands. "We're not under that kind of timeline this time around."

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst took no chances with raucous protesters in the second special session on Monday. Security was much tighter than before, with troopers ? some of them in riot gear ? throughout the Capitol complex.

When protesters filed into the House and Senate galleries, pages provided them with copies of the rules warning them that if they disrupted the proceedings, they'd be ejected. There were no arrests or any incidents of violence reported.

And Dewhurst said the Senate would make one major procedural change as well. Rather than follow tradition and require a two-thirds vote to bring up a bill for consideration, he said it would take only a simple majority during this session. That could prove critical because Democrats hold 12 out of 31 seats and successfully blocked the abortion law during the regular legislative session.

On the House side, State Affairs Chairman Byron Cook, R-Corsicana, said he would only allow less than nine hours of public testimony on the bill. Public protests erupted two weeks ago when he cut off testimony during the last session after 12 hours and denied more than 260 women the chance to speak.

"A wise man once said, nothing good happens after midnight," Cook said, explaining why he was limiting testimony.

Although there would be no action on either floor during the Fourth of July week, committees were set to hold public hearings to consider the measure.

Cook said his committee could approve the bill early Wednesday morning. The soonest the bill could pass the full Legislature is July 10, unless the Republican majorities suspend the rules to move it sooner. Gov. Rick Perry could sign the bill into law almost immediately.

"The Texas Legislature is poised to finish its history-making work this year by passing legislation to protect the unborn and women's health," Perry said Monday in a statement.

Democrats can do little to stop the bill this time, only slow it down with parliamentary procedure. A late start gave Davis a chance to filibuster the bill on the last day of the session, but with 30 days in the new one, a repeat seems nearly impossible.

"We know where the votes are. We also know what the calendar is. We know how difficult that calendar can be when its working against you," said Austin Democratic Sen. Kirk Waston, suggesting the bill will likely end up in court. "If they win this battle ... I believe we will win the war."

Davis, whose filibuster helped catapult her into the national spotlight, told a crowd of some 5,000 opponents in orange T-shirts that their support helped her maintain the effort.

"You were at the crux of a turning point in Texas history," Davis said.

The rally on the Capitol's south steps was the largest seen in Austin for years. Although far outnumbered, a few hundred supporters of the bill wore blue and recited the Lord's Prayer outside the Senate chamber.

The legislative process now starts over, with lawmakers filing bills, committees holding public hearings on each, then passing them to both full chambers to consider. That means reviving the proposals Davis and the protesters killed: banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, requiring that the procedure be performed at ambulatory surgical centers, and mandating that doctors who perform abortions obtain admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles.

Only five out of 42 clinics qualify as ambulatory surgical centers and they are located only in major metropolitan areas. Dewhurst has acknowledged that the ultimate goal is to shutter abortion clinics.

Lainie Duro sat on the Capitol floor at 8 a.m. Monday with a stack of feminist literature and sex education books.

"I'm always part of the unruly mob. We refuse to be ruled," she said. "Poor women, women of color, rural women. If they need abortion they will not be able to get an abortion. Health care in Texas is already difficult for people in poverty to access."

Outside the Capitol, Sean Ollech and another protester in blue held up a large photo of an aborted fetus.

"This is so they can see the face of abortion," said Ollech, 32, of Austin. "This is what's going on right now across Texas."
