Hawaii State Senate honored Hawaii recipients of the United States Small Business Administration?s 2012 Awards.

Honolulu-? The Senate today honored Hawaii recipients of the United States Small Business Administration?s 2012 Awards with a Certificate of Recognition.? Among those honored by the Senate included:

  • Michael Tokunaga, recipient of the 2012 Small Business Person of the Year award, was honored for his demonstration of outstanding skills and ability to create successes in the small business community. After taking over S. Tokunaga, a fishing and ocean sports store in 1991, Tokunaga has continued his family?s legacy of hard work and determination through diversifying product lines and adopting a 21st century integrated marketing strategy.
  • John and Daisy Carpenter, owners of Island Slipper Factory, were honored for their receiving the 2012 Small Business Exporter of the Year award. The award honors individuals who own and operate a small business engaged in exporting products or services outside the United States.? Making over 80 styles of footwear true to the Hawaiian lifestyle the Carpenters produce 100% of their high-end export sandals in Hawaii and sell to customers on the mainland, in the Caribbean, Central America, the South Pacific, and Japan.
  • Jerry Guyo was recognized for receiving the 2012 SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. As President and owner of Pacific Ice Services, Inc. since 2007, Guyo was a promising refrigerator technician when he started with the company four years earlier.? Still under 30 years of age, Guyo shows natural business skills that have allowed him to grow his small business by expanding his market on neighbor islands, arranging service agreements and establishing financing and leasing plans.
  • Susumu Oshima was recognized for receiving the 2012 Family-Owned Business of the Year award. The award honors family owned small businesses with more than 15 years of history that have passed ownership and operations from one generation to another.? Though Oshima Store has operated as a general merchandising and convenience store for the past 85 years, it is the vision, experience and leadership of Oshima that have successfully navigated the rough and changing business patterns of the last 65 years for this family-owned business.
  • Glenn Kishida was recognized for receiving The 2012 Financial Services Champion of the Year award honors an individual who assists small businesses through advocacy efforts to increase the usefulness and availability of account or financial services to small businesses. A vital and contributing member of Hawaii?s business community for nearly 40 years, Kishida is a financial advisor with Nexus Trusted Advisors, a savvy CPA, and former founding partner in one of the state?s largest accounting firms.
  • Kathleen Davenport was recognized for receiving the 2012 Women in Business Champion of the Year award, which goes to an individual who has, as an advocate for women entrepreneurs, fulfilled a commitment to the advancement of women?s business ownership.? A small business owner, photographer, success coach and speaker, Davenport is an outstanding advocate and champion for women?s advancement and full participation in free enterprise and business.? A retired Air Force Defense Intelligence consultant, she has always been passionate about volunteering, networking and creating opportunities.
  • Vince Dydasco was honored for receiving the 2012 Veteran Small Business Champion of the Year award, which honors an individual who has fulfilled a commitment to advancing small business opportunities for Veteran?s of the U.S. Armed Forces. Dydasco?s role as a SCORE Mentor and Chapter leader goes far beyond working with clients to meet their needs for business support and training.? A busy professional in Honolulu, he commits countless volunteer hours to promoting, developing and managing SCORE, a business assistance organization funded in part by SBA.
  • Dana Hauanio was honored for receiving the 2012 Minority Small Business Champion of the Year award, which honors individuals who have fulfilled a commitment to support and assist minority entrepreneurs and small business owners. As Project Director of the Minority Business Center at the University of Hawaii, Hauanio leads an organization that cultivates and supports the entrepreneurial spirit in Hawaii?s diverse minority community.? With her team of consultants, she provides assistance to small business owners in financial analysis, operations, and management.
  • Constance Cate was honored for receiving the 2012 Home-Based Business Champion of the Year award. As the Director for the East Hawai?i office of the Hawai?i SBDC Network, Cate continues to be a powerful advocate and leader for the home-based business sector.? She carefully reviews regulations that impact home business operators and educates community members on important issues.
