Malaysia acts as proxy for Israel!

Calcutta: Quite a few of the Islamic members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) are ?infuriated? that Malaysia, which is itself a Muslim-majority state, acted as a ?proxy? for Israel during the world body?s annual conference week, which ended in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday afternoon.

According to a top source of The Telegraph, no official of the Israel Cricket Association (ICA) attended the annual conference because of ?visa problems? and, so, the country?s proxy was given to the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA).

Stanley Perlman, the chairman of the ICA, confirmed that neither he nor anybody else went to Kuala Lumpur, but disagreed with the visa bit.

Speaking exclusively from Tel Aviv, Perlman said: ?It?s because of business commitments that I couldn?t travel... There?s no other reason at all... The ICA and the MCA have close ties and I?m not aware of a controversy.?

However, Perlman accepted that ?ordinary Israelis? could find it very tough, if not impossible, to get a Malaysian visa.

Perlman, by the way, is a former member of the ICC?s Executive Board.

Both Malaysia and Israel are Associate members of the ICC, which is a step below the Full (Test-playing) members. The third and last category comprises the Affiliate members.

The top source, who spoke from Kuala Lumpur, added: ?Malaysia should have declined to act as Israel?s proxy. Not doing so cost the MCA president, P. Krishnasami, heavily...

?It?s largely because of the Israel connection that Krishnasami fared rather poorly in the election among the Associates for the three seats on the ICC?s Executive Board.?

As it turned out, Scotland, Singapore and Bermuda retained their seats.

Malaysia used the proxy twice ? during the Associates? election and at the general council meeting, on Thursday morning.

England and Italy, too, were not present in the general council. Their proxies were Scotland and Denmark, respectively.

Nothing controversial about those two, though.
