Tips on Buying a New Home for an Expanding Family

76767005In many ways, homes are about the future. When you begin planning a move to a new home, you?re constantly looking ahead to determine what will meet not only your current needs, but also the needs you anticipate in the years ahead. If plans to expand your family weigh on your mind as you negotiate the search for a new family home, here are three things to keep in mind.

Layout. Try and be practical when determining what layout you prefer in a home. While open floor plans are inviting & aesthetically pleasing, they are not always practical for families. You need space dedicated to the kids and their stuff, and often their bedroom is not sufficient. If your kitchen, dining, and living rooms are all one large space with no separating walls, you will see the toys all the time. Also give some thought to whether or not you want a one-story home. If most or all bedrooms are on the ground floor, stairs don?t present as many issues, but an infant who sleeps upstairs, while mom and dad sleep a floor below, can make for many long nights.

Safety concerns. There are numerous safety issues you need to keep in mind while house hunting. Obviously, any water is a concern, whether it?s a pool in the back yard or a lake nearby. You may want to observe the traffic near the house during peak hours, as living on a busy street becomes a safety hazard once children are old enough to ride bikes, skate, play ball, etc. Stairs, inside or outside, present difficulties when toddlers are learning to walk and are a safety concern for children of any age.

Storage. Children may be small, but their stroller, swing, playpen, and toys are not. While a large open entryway may be beautiful and tempting, you will later regret purchasing a home that lacks closet space where clutter can be easily tucked away, out of sight.
